Michael Wood, an English historian wrote that “there are over 200 different Alexander epics and poems in medieval European languages alone” and that “Alexander is nothing short of a folk hero.” The amount of poetry alone shows the respect that medieval Europeans had for Alexander. From Alexander’s previous achievements that separated him from other generals, the people knew him enough to create him as a hero after his death. This shows the strength that Alexander had and that other people saw in him. In addition to the literature dedicated to Alexander the Great, there were also many busts and statues created in tribute to him. Alan M. Fildes, an Egyptologist and historian, wrote about how “Alexander’s image was replicated all over Egypt in monumental [statues].” He was also portrayed as a “strong ruler, he who seizes the lands of the foreigners, beloved of Amun and the chosen one of Ra.’” by the Egyptians. From just one of his conquered areas, many monumental statues were created because this group of people also believed that Alexander was great. For the people to have created many statues in honor of Alexander the Great, he must have stood out in a field known by them. People of many areas contributed to the memory of Alexander through literature and monuments.
