Montresor wants to seek revenge on Fortunato by any means outside of the law; however, he never confesses how Fortunato offended him he states, “…but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge” (533). Montresor took the insult to a whole another level that he wanted to kill him. Montresor planned everything he was going to say and do in order to get Fortunato to go down with him to his vault, and then kill him there. He knew Fortunato “had a weak point” when it came down to wine tasting (533). Montresor was going to take advantage of him since he was already intoxicated with alcohol to seduce him to taste the Amontillado, and then kill him there.

For example, he makes Fortunato jealous when he tells him that it was fine for them to head back, because Luchesi could go back and try it. Fortunato’s ambition to try the Amontillado led him to his own death. There was many reasons why Fortunato should had turned back, but because he was intoxicated by alcohol, he was not on his senses to act correctly. He was also stubborn because he did not want Luchesi to take his spot in tasting the Amontillado, because Fortunato was well known for being the best wine
