Corporate Villain or Third World Philanthropist

Is hiring children in third world countries for cheap labor extorting or giving

them good opportunities? In reality the businesses are taking advantage over people who live in conditions were the amount of money the children could possibly earn could be detrimental to the families income. The businesses who hire these children are now incredibly happy because they get their product made for cheap, but on the other-side these children work so they can bring in whatever income they can bring in to their families.     This is a game in which everyone involved wins; except the innocent kids. Working long hours at a young age can have a tremendous negative impact in children over time. Not to mention the mental turmoil they face as they are pressured to work at a fast pace to get work done in a short amount of time. While looking for a solution, we must first figure out why we have the problem in the first place. Child labor practices are still prevalent because as companies expand, they must employ more laborers to keep up with demand. Children workers are obedient, making them easy to manage and because supply chains are so complex, most kids are able to slip under the radar without a problem. One of the common myths often discussed is that those in improvised households depend on their children’s income as a means of survival. This is a misconception that does not solve the problem, but instead makes it worse. When children begin working at a young age they often do not have the opportunity to receive an education, this then becomes a cycle that is hard to break and the issue gets passed on to the next generation. In an article presented by Caitlin Ryan, a public policy candidate at Harvard University who has experience working with human rights organizations she blames poverty for the issue, while examining ways to eliminate child labor using work study programs (Ryan 92). This program works by having kids work a few days a month in safe conditions, in return employers pay for 70 percent of education costs. A sponsorship programs like this will help families receive much-needed income, while keeping kids in school.     The solution is Fairtrade. In order to reduce the amount of child laborers in clothing sweatshops, American consumers should purchase Fairtrade clothes and other imported products such as coffee, chocolate and bananas. Producers who are Fairtrade Certified must follow set standards that apply to child labor and human rights made by Fairtrade International. These set standards include prohibition of children under age of 15 can by working for the producer’s business and children who are fifteen and older cannot take part in work that interferes with school or their health. According to Fairtrade International, there are over 1,210 Fairtrade certified producer organizations in 74 different countries. This growing number is significant because among these producers, child labor, hazardous working conditions and unfair wages and hours cease to exist. Also, when American consumers buy Fairtrade products, farmers and producers receive set premiums which are then used to help their local communities. Premiums are used to build schools and other programs for the children. Likewise, Fairtrade staff members come to the communities of their certified producers to form relationships with the children.     Child labor was once a prevalent issue in the United States – a combination of cruelty, coercion, and abuse characterizes its entirety.     Children as young as six years old worked long hours in poor environments, this is child labor. The work harms children or keeps them from attending school. All around the world and including U. S., grew gaps between rich and poor in recent decades having to force millions of young children to be out of school and into work. The International Labor Organization estimates that 215 million children between the ages of 5 and 17 currently work under conditions that are considered illegal, hazardous, or extremely exploitative. Underage children work all sorts of jobs, usually because the children and their families are extremely poor. Large numbers of children work in commercial agriculture, fishing, manufacturing, mining, and domestic service. Some children work in illicit activities like the drug trade and prostitution or other traumatic activities such as serving as soldiers. Forms of child labor, including indentured servitude and child slavery, have existed throughout history. As industrialization moved workers from farms and home workshops into urban areas and factory work, children were often preferred, because factory owners viewed them as more manageable, cheaper, and less likely to strike. Growing opposition to child labor in the North caused many factories to move to the South.
