Who is Kip Stephen Thorne? Kip Thorne was born on June 1, 1940 in Logan,
Utah (age 77). He was an American theoretical physicist and was known for how much information he carried around about physics. He got married to Linda Jean Peterson in
1960 and had two children. He then got a divorce in 1977. He got remarried to Carolee
Joyce Winstein in 1984. Kip Thorne got his education in the California Institute of
Technology and in Princeton University. The field he majored in was Astrophysics. He excelled in many things and became one of the youngest full professors in the history of the California Institute of Technology. He received a bachelor’s degree in science from
Caltech in 1962 and then received his Masters Degree and Ph.D. degree from Princeton

When he returned to Caltech, he became a professor of theatrical physics in 1970. After a couple years, Kip Thorne wrote Gravitation in 1973, which became the standard graduate school text on general relativity. After a few more years he also wrote a very popular book called Black Holes and Time Warps: Einstein’s Outrageous Legacy, which was written in
1994.
Kip Stephen Thorne really is one of the most skilled leading physicists in the world in the area of gravitation and astrophysics. His work was being known in the early
1970’s with the theory of pulsations. He formulized the mathematical analysis of gravitational waves. From the 1980’s to the 2000s, Kip co-founded the LIGO, which stands for Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory. “This project targeted
Gravitational Wave sources that were worthy of study”. Over the next couple years, he has renewed and advanced the LIGO system. With the help of a girl named Anna
Zytkow, Kip predicted the existence of red supergiant stars that have neutron star cores.

Kip Thorne was a theoretical physicist who researched and did important work on the nature of these “space-time ripples.” This discovery about gravitational waves marks victory for the many physicists with the
LIGO. Albert Einstein was the one who predicted the existence of gravitational waves
100 years ago. Kip Thorne’s observation of Gravitational Waves tests Albert Einstein’s theory of gravity. This discovery also opened up a new field in the subject of astronomy.
When it became clear that the US national science foundation would not fund two separate efforts, that is when the LIGO collaboration was born.
Rainer Weiss and Kip Thorne were the two out of three physicists known as the
Troika. They were the founders of the LIGO. Many researchers were expecting the physics committee to reward Barry Barish, Kip Thorne, and Rainer Weiss since last year’s detection announcement. Half of the Nobel Prize had been given to Rainer Weiss and the other half was split between Barry Barish and Kip Thorne.
