Who Is Leonard Cohen's Song 'Hallelujah'
The very first verse of “Hallelujah”, written by Leonard Cohen, pains me because it brings me back to the feeling of doing everything in my being to please someone close to me, yet it still not being enough to make them happy. On the other hand I see it as Cohen talking about how his faith in God is so meaningful to him, but someone in his life doesn’t share the same faith. While reading the lyrics I cannot help but to think about all the biblical references. Having those references disassociates me from the song a little bit since I do not understand the majority of them. However when I hear the song I do not think much about the words, but rather the soul and beauty attached to those words.
The whole song speaks of unrequited love yet when

The theme in the poem "For Anne" by Leonard Cohen is telling the readers how one should treat people or things greatly and right before losing it and regretting. Leonard Cohen feel that he did not treat Anne greatly before she is gone so he wrote a poem "For Anne" for Anne who is now gone. I know that this poem is about Anne because the title of this poem is "For Anne" which show that this poem is for Anne. Also with the poem starting with "With Anne gone" I can predict Anne being gone or she left the writer. The writer compares his life with Anne and without Anne. Some statistics in the poem would be "Whose eyes to compare with the sun" and "Not that I did compare, But I do compare". The phrase…

Generally considered to be one of the most notable of the sacred hymns contained within the book of Psalms, Psalm 139 is perhaps one of the most sublime declarations of the omnipresence of God found in the Bible. Attested to David, Psalm 139 is classified as an “Individual Hymn of Thanksgiving” 1 a genre in which God is praised for the singers’ delivery from oppression and various life-threatening illnesses while also acting as a “Wisdom” psalm, celebrating the creative goodness of God. While the actual date of the text remains unclear as it is notoriously difficult to determine a date and historical context for every psalm, most scholars agree that the hymn was written during the time of King David’s reign, there is however, some dispute among…

The form of the poem “Amazing Grace” is different from other literature readings from the book. “Amazing Grace” is a special type of literature; a poem in a form of a song. “A hymn is a lyric poem or sacred song which is written in praise to a deity or spirit” (Wheeler, 2012). This type of literary form is appealing to read and hear. The poem comes to life as it is being played. This type of literary form has an advantage over other types due to the poem is being composed specifically to be heard, not read.…

This song that everyone is so willing to place above human lives and our common concerns was never intended to be a fascist stick used to compel, all, to come to attention at the altar of military worship. In fact, just the opposite, liberty, freedom, in the beginning, had been, just that, freedom to pray where you please, or not to pray at all, to believe in what you wish or not to believe at all. We now must all do exactly what is acceptable to the herd or be shamed and ostracized as if to be a heretic to the religion of, Mob...…

Leonard Cohen was the original artist of the so loved song hallelujah. It was released in 1984 on Cohen’s album Various Positions. Before the song was released, many record artist doubted the song. Even after the song was released it did not achieve its popularity until a decade later when Jeff Buckley released a revised version on his record. After Jeff Buckley released a version of this song on his record Hallelujahs journey to success began. Hallelujah was recorded and sang by over 100 artist, ranging from U2, Justin Timberlake, Bon Jovi, and Willie Nelson. The song has many interpretations and has a meaning that nobody is really sure about. Jeff Buckley said “Whoever listens carefully to Hallelujah will discover that it is a song about sex, about love, about life on earth. The hallelujah is not an homage to a worshipped person, idol, or god, but the hallelujah of the orgasm. It’s an ode to life and love.” On the other hand Leonard Cohen suggested “Hallelujah is a Hebrew word which means Glory to the Lord.” In Lights article he showed that people took the meanings however they want and the song can go with any situation. Jeff Buckley’s version was played after a 9/11 tribute. “The faith, hope, and happiness it brings is why Hallelujah has survived so many decades,” Light stated. Many versions of the song have been played elsewhere to fulfill faith, hope, and happiness. “Various versions have been played at funerals and weddings,” Light stated. Hallelujah many meanings give hope and a sense of happiness to people. This is why the song is one of the greatest hits ever to hit our ears…

Personally, i feel that the meaning of these lyrics is that although everyone have rites now, we do not have freedom until gay marriage is accepted and legalized in society. These lyrics show how much society looks down and writes rude and unneccesary comments about gay relationships and marriage unintentionally at times, and that it is now a habit for society to bring down gay rights through speech unintentionally in our everyday conversations. People not thinking that “man thats gay” is going to have an impact on homosexuals and how they feel about themselves. These lyrics show people who are not homosexual, that they do not think about how their speech effects others and/or do not care about how homosexuals feel when ‘gay’ is used as a figure of speech. This scene relates to the rest of the music video because it shows that gay rights are not looked at seriously and not only do poeple actions show how they feel about gay rights, but it also shows through their speech. These lyrics were in some way inspiring and in other very eye opening because it really made me think about how much the word 'gay' is used in peoples day to day speech while criticizing someone/something. It made me personally think twice about what i say and in what context i use the word 'gay' during my…

The opening song, “Where is the Love?” sings about how the world is lacking in love. The only love we have is for our own race which only leaves room for discrimination and hate. Our lack of understanding leads us away from unity. The closing song, “Born this Way” sings about accepting yourself. “ There is nothing wrong with loving who you are” because God made us perfect with no mistakes. We are all beautiful in our own way and shouldn’t bring ourselves down because of what others say. Additionally, the general theme of acceptance is more than what it appears to be. It involves aspects such as equality, understanding, respect, and unity as well. We wrote our prayers and petitions according to these so they relate to our overall…
