Unlucky in love. Molly wouldn’t exactly use those terms to describe herself since she hasn’t actually been in love. She hasn’t had a series of bad boyfriends, or casual clumsy sex. She doesn’t have tales of bad hookups to share with her friends over drinks. She can’t help but ask herself; is she unlucky in love or just unlovable? The Virgin Molly explores that question throughout its premise.
On her 25th birthday, Molly Dowers, is once again hit with the realization that she is twenty-five and still a virgin. The foreboding embarrassment of yet another passing birthday without real connection sets in. She can’t help but feel like she isn’t normal. In the show opener we are met with an anxious Molly dealing with feelings of loneliness and inadequacy while also preparing for her birthday celebration. After a series of mixed alcoholic beverages she drunkenly announces to her close friends, roommates, and the entirety of the world wide web that she is not only a virgin, but desperately wants to have sex. Throughout, the series Molly explores romantic connection through disastrous dating and sexual situations.
She starts discovering and learning about her own romantic prowess, sexual orientation, and ideals of intimacy as she haphazardly stumbles through companionship. Ultimately, Molly learns, that sex won’t cure her loneliness, and that intimacy can come in many forms, and choosing when and who to share it with is an important part of sexual
freedom.
