“In the past when a majority of persons never attended school past the primary level, a college education meant very little”, concluded most of the elders interviewed. This was mainly because persons were able to care for themselves and their families without attaining a college education. Not only were most persons involved with handy work which was learnt from demonstration and experience, but also, in farming, especially subsistence farming which was a very popular way in which the family was fed. In agreement with the Iona College (2013), college educates know that they are now competent to do the specific jobs that they apply for; they are encouraged to apply for posts at different organizations where they believe they will be happy with factors such as the working conditions and salaries. Not only do these individuals tend to express a level of freedom and experience less disrespect in the workplace, but also, they tend to feel more relaxed and secure (Hardy, 2013). Knowing that they have what is needed to get the job done, they are less worried about someone outperforming them at their jobs or having to please employers in unethical and disrespectful situations in order to keep their jobs, as stated by an interviewee. On the contrary, as supported by Wallace (2010) persons without a college degree who by some chance or other acquire jobs feel very intimidated to leave their current jobs in search of another. This is because they know that they will face difficulty in finding other jobs without convincing the employer that they possess the competencies required without any qualification papers. Consequently, these individuals are stuck in menial jobs where they are usually unhappy because of a number of reasons including not being able to support their families fully, working long hours and doing the job of more than one person. Everyone, from a very tender age begins to set their life goals. Persons choose to be different figures in their communities and society. Most if not all of these careers that persons wish to pursue begin with them attaining a college education (Moldoff, 2013). Have you heard of any president without a college education? In today’s world, following your dreams must land you in college at one time or another. College education, for some persons serve as a stepping stone while others feel comfortable with the lifestyle earned from attaining a college education. This depends heavily on what path you want to take in life. Would you rather anyone build you cupboards or would you rather have it done by someone who can show that they are qualified to build you the cupboards? Today, most jobs that were considered as menial such as attaching a knob to a door or putting up a simple shelf are now being taught at colleges. This too has made these professions very expensive because these persons now hold qualification papers for the different jobs. Foregoing a college education can be very depressing for persons as they may feel that they will never be successful in life (Moldoff, 2013).
