Joseph Hook ended up taking command of his troops. But then again in March of 1863 he was given yet another command. During this time he arrested Es-congressman Clement Vallandigham. This put Burnside under criticism. Burnside ended up going against Confederate General Longstreet. He had successfully held Knoxville until Union reinforcements arrived. Due to this he was commanded to take control of another group of men. During this time he greatly contributed to the overload campaign ran by Ulysses Grant where they fought and won the battles of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, North Anna, and Cold Harbor. After this string of successes during the siege of Petersburg, he they filled a union mine with explosives in an attempt to blow a gap in the Confederate lines. When this was executed Burnside was late on the detonation and lost Union lives because of it. After that Burnside resigned from his duties for the final time. After the war Ambrose became the senator of Rhode Island. Despite what might be considered a flop of a milItary career his flawless facial hair tends to overshadow all of the
