Why Are Drills Important

Marine traditions are passed from generation to generation to sustain our base and beliefs. However sometimes certain traditions may fade within in time if not emphasized and practiced by leaders. In order to build a strong foundation it’s important to often remind ourselves of the bond that upholds us. Passing along the core values, traditions, customs and history of our Corps is necessary to promote good order and discipline. Drills are an example of one of the many traditions that have been part of the history of our Corps. Drill movements have been mostly used in the past by our ancestor in order to win our greatest battle. However today drills can benefit in others ways and may be used in the unit to promote participation and discipline. Drills should be part of a routine and should be reinforced by the NCO in charge. It’s the duty of the NCO to hold mandatory drill professional military education for a minimum of three hours a week. This is done because it sets a tone for mass troops to listen carefully and execute movements coming from one Marine. It’s critical that Marines learn to follow orders, this practice will ensure that Marines are ready for the battlefield. The foundation of a drill starts on boot camp, where Marines learn to understand and acknowledge a drill. To continue this important practice the NCO in charge should promote drills in their respective small units. When given a lawful order by a fellow Marine of a leadership position regardless of rank, the mass force must execute quickly and diligently to prevent a mishap. Drills also help to create a militant environment that reminds the masses that they are Marines and must hold themselves to a higher standard. (Vexen Crabtree,
