In the war there was a point when the army had to retreat as they were overwhelmed by Japanese forces, during this time those that were injured could not retreat and needed help. Desmond Doss talks about the moment when everyone is retreating down the deadly ridge they had just climbed, “I had these men up there and I shouldn't leave 'em," said Desmond. "They were my buddies, some of the men had families, and they trust me. I didn't feel like I should value my life above my buddy's, so I decided to stay with them and take care of as many of them as I could. I didn't know how I was gonna do it”(Lang). This quote shows Desmond Doss’s selfless acts as he values his friends’ life more than he values his. This is true because he had the chance to retreat with the rest of the soldiers, but he stayed back to help them. These kinds of acts helped them win the battle because by saving the trapped soldiers and healing them it increases the amount of people fighting in the war. In important wars like this someone needs to become a leader and that person was Desmond Doss. Desmond Doss was discriminated and received many injuries in the war, but he displayed selflessness and dedication which allowed him to save over 75 people and earn many awards. As a result, this leadership and bravery at Hacksaw Ridge, provided by Desmond Doss, reversed the momentum of World War II favoring the United States.
