If they were taken aware or threatened, then it would create inequality amongst the constitutional balance. Lincoln even took and gave his interpretation of the Fugitive Slave Law and, based on his interpretation the slave should be returned to the state that they served because just because they escaped the state doesn’t mean they are relieved of their duties. Lincoln was trying to tell the south that they were in no danger of losing their “property,” but South Carolina had already made the actions of seceding before he had time to explain his goals while being in office. The newly president declared that he would do what is necessary to maintain a Union that will constitutionally defend and maintain itself, preferably without bloodshed of violence, unless forced upon the nation. Although the south has already begun to leave the Union, Lincoln would rather maintain a healthy friendship, rather than be enemies because he believes the south will come to the realization that they are better off being a part of the Union.
