Why The War Happened
After the French and Indian War, Britain lost a lot of money. So to pay back their debts, they taxed the colonies on a variety of things. These items include tea, paint, and other essentials. The colonists ended up rebelling because they didn’t like paying all this extra money. They formed committees and had many meetings about how to resolve the problem peacefully, but that didn’t happen. They sent the Declaration of Independence, but the king wouldn’t even look at it because he wouldn’t stand for their rebellion. The Battle of Monmouth
So you might have heard about the men that served in the war such as George Washington, but they weren’t the only ones on the battlefield. Women that were good in combat snuck into battles to fight, and others who weren’t so good in combat did things just as dangerous and brave.
One battle where an important woman fought was the Battle of Monmouth. It took place in Monmouth, New Jersey, on June 28, 1778 because General Washington heard the news that the British were leaving their guarded post in Philadelphia and heading toward New York. He wanted to cut them off and defeat them when they weren’t ready. During this battle, there were camp followers. They were women lead by Martha Washington who followed around troops to cook, sew, and mend clothes. During battle, they would cool off cannons and refreshed thirsty soldiers with water.
