USSR or The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics or the Soviet Union, had many names but no individuality. It was a conglomeration of 15 Soviet Republics, governed as a single party state and led by the communist party at its centre with Moscow as its capital. None of these states were independent but they had their independent issues. The soviet governed from the year 1922 to 1991, it kept U.S.A’s powers in check consistently but in that course the expenditure it infused on its machinery and weaponry had a negative impact on its citizens. Keeping the control in the centre as its their ideology would have been acceptable if they inculcated the issues of all their republics in their decisions, It would have led to a new soviet style of federalism which would have been applauded globally, our voices be heard is all that people wanted. Perestroika was indirectly implemented with a different name by XIOPING in China but unlike USSR China saw a gradual growth in it’s GDP whereas the soviets saw a fall. The reason was that the basic economic principle on the basis of which a economy thrives was being decided by a state instead of market forces. Prices and supply was being fixed by the state and Ruble convertibility was also on soviets command which made the USSR’s currency extremely weak. Reforms like foreign investment on the basis that the foreign firm partners with a Soviet state or local firm was a good initative but why would an investor invest in a republic who doesn’t study the market it produces in while making a fiscal …show more content…
Today we have 2 superpowers, China and USA - we are heavily dominated by their products and their cultural influences are also visible in the clothes we wear to the food we eat. Presence of USSR would have curbed the impact these developed countries have on other developing countries. Curbing their impact would have kept their powers in check consistently throughout these years, something which is needed especially in the case of the over ambitious China. Critics argue that Russian Hardliners would have brought down the liberties provided by Perestroika but I feel the presence of Glasnost would have opposed that. The presence of Cold War led to a huge scale of research and development and at a good pace also which would have ultimately caused some major achievements in science and technology, impact of which would be witnessed
