Ever wonder why dogs cannot consume specific foods? Some of the foods they cannot consume contain an enzyme or chemical that can affect their body. Dogs are omnivores which means that they can eat plants and meat. Even though they are omnivores, certain foods they eat can hurt them and can even be fatal to them.
One of the foods that is terrible for canines is chocolate. Chocolate contains a substance called "methylxanthines" (People Food to Avoid Feeding Your Pets 4). Methylxanthines are chemicals and are the reason that chocolate is harmful for dogs. Some of the effects that can happen are "excessive thirst and urination, hyperactivity, abnormal heart rhythm, tremors, seizures and even death" (People Food to Avoid Feeding Your Pets 4). The size of the dog depends on how much chocolate it needs to eat to get sick. Depending on what kind of chocolate a pet eats can also depend on how severe the effect is. The darker the chocolate, the more dangerous it is. Lighter chocolates are less dangerous for dogs because they have less methylxanthines. Thus, chocolate is horrible to give to canines because it can be harmful and dangerous to them.
