What My Dogs Have Taught Me I’ve taught my dogs many things. How to sit, how to stop jumping all over guests, and how to stop wiggling their butts all over people as a greeting (okay, I’m still working on that one). But what have my dogs taught me over the years? My German Shepherd, Trooper, was neglected by a police officer for the first year of his life, but we rescued him and he had nine happy years with our family, where he was loved unconditionally. He taught me that where I have been in the past does not indicate where I am headed in my future. My pit bulls have taught me that as long as my loved ones and I know who I am and what I am truly like, then I don’t have to worry about what anyone else thinks. Every time I lost one of my dogs, my heart was broken, and I felt like it would be impossible to love another dog, but I feel love again with every dog I meet at the shelter. Dogs teach us what it is to give and not expect anything in return, they teach us the meaning of unconditional love, and the only thing they truly want from us is that same love. Everyone knows that dogs don’t live as long as we do, which is one of the hardest parts of being a dog owner, but it’s because they’re here to teach us how to love. Dogs already know how, which is why they don’t stay for as long as we do, it takes us a little longer to learn selflessness and love. My dogs taught me what it is to love and to be loved.
