Why Do People Cast Out The Prophets?

Heavenly Father reveals His gospel through prophets in all eras of time.

In my youth I enjoyed learning about different cultures, religions, and philosophies. Frequently I would see how the things I had learned as a child were reflected in the practices and beliefs of people very different from myself. I could see simple truths become evident not only in things explained by tradition, science, or logic, but also by means that could not be explained. I had begun my journey of living by faith.

How do I (does one) “cast out” the prophet?

Humans are very logical, and often critical. When a person that can only see the world from the perspective of fact is asked to open their mind in a way that isn’t purely factual, many times they reject the deep lessons that can be learned simply because they refuse to accept that there is more than what we can see, hear, feel, touch, and taste. Especially in this day and age where people’s lives are so centered around themselves, buying more materialistic things to satisfy their desires, while they remain spiritaully weak on the inside.
This is why many people discredit and even resist many of the teachings of the Gospel and our Prophet. I find that keeping this in mind while trying to help others, even that they may mock me or ridicule me for what I believe, keeps me centered on what really matters. We have to realize that we may not understand the reason behind every decision that the prophet makes, because it takes time for us to realize the truth of his words in our own lives, and that truth can come too late to us if we choose to ignore it.

We must have the faith to follow Christ, even when it no longer seems possible. Do you think that you could step out of that boat and walk on water if Christ called to you? I find peace in knowing that I probably won’t have to deal with a similar situation as John, but I know that I have experienced times where it was difficult for me to choose between Christ and the world, and I know that I will see those crossroads again many more times in my
