It provides for us some back story about the character's life as it says that some people thought he wasn't good enough for her or perhaps she wouldn't acknowledge him as a commendable husband. It also includes foreshadowing as it says nobody ever thought rather than nobody thinks which tells us that at some point in the story he will get wed to her. This engages the reader as they will need to find out what will happen after the wedding and why people didn't think she would need to wed John Charrington. The opening also has some gothic words like 'bewitched'. This provides for you the thought that there is maybe something spooky that is going to happen and makes you ask why the creator picked this specific word rather than one like charm. IT gives us a feeling that she picked this expression on purpose. Close to the end of the opening when John and Mary are sitting in a park John said " My dear I believe I would come back from the dead if you wanted me to'. This sentence obviously implies that something terrible will happen later in the story, perhaps John Charrington gets killed or gets hurt, however we don't know, so we carry on reading. The reader carries on reading what is in the book in anticipation of something happening. They draw us in by making little clues of what may
happen later on to make you need to read on and figure out what is going to happen, great or awful.
Edith Nesbit uses the regular scene of a proposal to open her story. This sets a reasonable starting for the readers. It makes it more likely that individuals will purchase her book as they will think that it scarier as they feel it could happen to them. Unrealistic stories with phantoms and vampires in were less likely to be sold as they were made up and this meant that the readers couldn't relate with the story. Additionally, these characters are clearly not true and make the book less startling as people realized that there was no way that this culd happen in real life and were not scared or anxious when they read the book.
