In August 2005 there was a massive storm brewing and growing into a storm like no other storm, Hurricane Katrina. In the days before the storm hit, there were many agencies gathering information and trying to give a good guess on when, where, and how bad this storm was going to be. Some people listened and prepared and some did not. Why? Why didn’t some people even know the storm was coming? Why did some leave? Why did some stay? Who were these people? Not too sure how much critically thinking was going on here, or was there, and the people of New Orleans could not do anything else but stay. The documentary showed that most people that left were the ones who could afford to leave and the rest were left to fend for themselves. By law if there is a mandatory evacuation ordered, then all must be given ways out of the area by government help, which by the movie said never happened.…

Many lost their homes and all of their belongings. They were left with nowhere to go. The American Red Cross worked for many hours in an attempt to help the communities. They helped about two-hundred shelters in several states by providing food and other necessary materials they would need to take care of Ike victims. They provided 100,000 overnight stays for Ike survivors that had to evacuate their homes. Many community services provided mobile feeding vehicles to some areas. When homes were destroyed Texas had a serious blackout. CenterPoint energy provides power to Houston after the blackout. This helped the shelters that needed this energy to house all the people that needed help (American, n.d., p. 1-2). The hurricane cause a lot of damage but also a lot of sadness to the families that were left with almost…

Doss had no time. Desmond Thomas Doss was an USA Army corporal who saved the lives of 75 wounded infantrymen atop the Maeda Escarpment without weapon. He used his life to gamble with death. Doss has a kindly soul. He wants to use his power to help, not to kill. He refused to kill an enemy soldier or carry a weapon into combat. He saved even his rivals. Doss mother raised him as a devout Seventh-day Adventist and instilled Sabbath-keeping, nonviolence, and a vegetarian lifestyle in his upbringing. In my opinion, people are born good. Prior to landfall, the doors to the Superdome opened and approximately 16,000 people sought refuge there, but 16,000 would not even make a dent in 70,000 people who sought shelter after the storm. After Katrina took her path through the south (dissipating near the Great Lakes), the damage continued. As the shelters arose, FEMA officials became aware with that fact that their accommodations would not be enough. “More than one million people in the Gulf region were displaced by the storm. At their peak hurricane relief shelters housed 273,000 people. Later, approximately 114,000 households were housed in FEMA trailers” (“Hurricane Katrina”). Even the Governor of Louisiana projected the downfall of the safety camps. “The shelters will end up probably without electricity or with minimum electricity from generators in the end (United States et al.). Consequently, countless numbers of people needed to look for help elsewhere, whether it meant to uproot and settle down within another state, fend for themselves in a harsh and dangerous time or even wait it out and hope for…

Although Louisiana residents realize the road to recovery will be long and hard, many are growing tired of all the devastation that has taken place. They constantly wonder how much devastation they can handle. Thome Dore, a frustrated Louisiana resident states, “People are saying they want things to return to normal, but who knows what the new normal will look like” (Ball 1)? In some communities, the flood has helped residents come together and help one another out. On the other hand, the flood has caused conflict with those who have suffered little damage versus major damage to…

As tropical storm Katrina formed into a category five hurricane, all gulf coast residents were warned. “By August 28, evacuations were underway across the region. That day, the National Weather Service predicted that after the storm hit, “most of the [Gulf Coast] area will be uninhabitable for weeks…perhaps longer.” After the evacuation plan was announced, those that were able to leave before the storm did. Poor and less fortunate residents had to stay put for the horrible storm brewing just miles away. There were also the stubborn elderly that insisted on staying just because they survived “Hurricane Betsy” in 1965, but what they would soon come to realize is they would be putting themselves and their families in danger.…

Hawthorne says, “It is to the credit of human nature, that … it loves more readily than it hates.”(122) This readiness to love and reluctance to hate in the nature of mankind shows that humans are, more often than not, good natured. If a person does not constantly dwell on the misdeed that…

There are also myriad examples showing the positivity in human nature. On the contrary, this may be due to taught values in society. One may argue that selfless actions done for other human beings show how humans may be inherently good. An example of an action corresponding to this theme would be an opposing softball team witnessing a girl who stuck a home-run collapse with a knee injury, but instead of leaving her there they brought her around all the bases, sacrificing their victory. The girls on the opposing team say sweet comments such as: “We just wanted to help her (text 4.)” and the girl with the knee injury says how she “would do the same for her in the same situation (text 4.)” One may think that kindness is an inherent property of humans or rather that society just teaches us how helping other human beings is the correct action to take in an event. Without a society to teach man what is morally right, man would want to do what is right for themselves so they can feel satisfied with themselves. Correspondingly, one may argue that “in most cases people will not do things to harm themselves or others (text 2)” therefore proving to be inherently good. Although this may be somewhat true, there is still a lot of violence that is present, even in today’s society. People’s inner evils may be at a chance of increasing due to the others around them acting hostile, therefore reverting their mindsets to their original nature. As explained in Hobbes’ work Leviathan, man “acts morally only when they are sure that others are the same (text 6,)” explaining how morals are put into thought only when others use them. Without the confidence that one is using morals, it is said that humans’ “rational behaviour leads [them] to attack others (text 6,)” which exhibits to how people may not do things to harm others when morals are present, but act more violent when morals are…

I believe all people are born generally good, but are corrupted by society later on in life. When we are born we have no idea of what our lives will become. As we grow, we encounter people that affect us in good and bad ways. We then have to take it upon ourselves to decide what is right and how we handle situations based on our previous experiences. Hence these experiences make our lives and tendencies good or bad. For example, many studies have found that those who grow up in a “broken home” or dysfunctional family are more likely to develop habits of lying, being irresponsible, and hyper-sensitive of peoples opinions about them. This is a direct effect of experiences they encountered growing up, whether it be trying to avoid harsh consequences by lying, trying to please someone who never shows support (causing hyper-sensitivity), or not having an influential adult who teaches them how to complete tasks properly (becoming irresponsible). I believe everyone I have come in contact with has been good in the end, meaning everyone has some sense of good deep inside of them. Whether that is apparent to the everyday person is decided by the unique path they've had through life.…

On August 23, 2005, Katrina was formed merely as a tropical storm that the people of the United States thought wouldn’t do any damage. On August 28, 2005, cities in southern Louisiana and Mississippi started to demand a mandatory evacuation, but numerous people were stranded with no form of transportation or anywhere to go. Thousands were left waiting to see if Katrina would really strike as the weather stations had predicted. “That day, the National Weather Service predicted that after the storm hit, ‘most of the [Gulf Coast] area will be uninhabitable for weeks…perhaps longer’” (History.com 1). “For example, some 112,000 of New Orleans’ nearly 500,000 people did not have access to a car” (History.com 1). “By nightfall, almost 80 percent of…

I think that humans are essentially good because of our common peaceful human nature. There are several circumstances in which we can prove that both of these sides are correct. In any culture and society, developed or undeveloped, civilized or uncivilized, there are sick and brutal crimes committed everyday, along with good acts also being done.. This includes countries that don’t even have laws, some people do evil just to do it, and some people do it unwillingly. Humans have two sides and if I had to guess, I would say that a majority are good compared to the bad, but we still have bad. Terrorism and brutal acts done to innocents show that there is bad in our world, but I would say we are essentially good and I am going to explain why I feel this way.…
