Why Do Societies Choose To Fail Or Succeed, By Jared Diamond
We have to understand the past before we can start thinking about the future. In history an ample amount of societies made mistakes that led to their downfall; comprehending the miscalculations that led to the disappearances of many societies will help people better prepare for the future. People in history have built nations, went through genocide, and have seen governments come crashing down along with their hopes and dreams, but the things that kept these people going in the midst of the good times and the bad times were the aspect of a better future. The book, Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed, by Jared Diamond focuses on how the practices that humans are employing in today’s society will affect the future. Diamond analyzes if there will be a future in a world where all we are doing is breaking the earth down. It can be recognized that the communities of the world will have to start recognizing problems and implementing programs to solve them, before they have no future at all. When people help start something that they are passionate about they never want to see …show more content…
Many people feel that problems that are brought upon them are not really problems. For instance, global warming has been called an issue that could have some traumatic effects for many decades, but the majority of people are in denial that their actions have an effect on the ozone layer. Consequently, this leads to the topic of global warming not being combatted, which in return leads to no solution. Timing is of the essence when trying to fix something that is on the verge of breaking or is already breaking. For instance, by the time people begin to realize that they are causing issues it could be too late to fix them and many people could have to live with the consequences. The truth is, the world is heading in a downward spiral due to the pure ignorance, denial, greed, and

Jared Diamond is a scientist and is the author of “The Worst Mistake in the History of the Human Race.” The article isn’t the clearest on what could be better. Would the human race have been better off living with the need to hunt and gather for their life, or would agriculture be the key to the survival for the human race? Jared believes moving back to a hunting/gathering lifestyle would be beneficiary to us. I believe Jared Diamond makes some great points, but that agriculture was a necessity for what we’ve accomplished.…

Complex societies Jared Diamond In his capturing magazine article, The Worst Mistake in the history of the Human Race, Jared Diamond disproves the overall of the progressive view that point out that the human race is exceptionally much way wealthier since several communities adopted agricultural activities around 10,000yrs ago (Diamond, 1987). He believes that we owe dramatic changes in our life to science. Such as Astronomy, biology, archaeology and agriculture. Most importantly, he depicts how immense archaeological findings attest civilization became worst after the prominent Neolithic Revolution.…

Malcolm Gladwell, the author of Outliers, reveals multiple stories on what makes people successful. These individuals achieved great things and their journeys to success were different than the average people, which made them outliers. An outlier is defined in a way that describes a person who achieves uncommon, but extraordinary things. In the book, The Other Wes Moore, the author, Wes Moore, had a journey full of success. Still, he grew up with no father, rough times at school, and even had encounters with the police. When his mother realized he needed an intervention, she sent him to military school. From there, he experienced a new environment and was surrounded by people who supported him. Later in life, he became a decorated veteran and…

Jared Diamond makes a compelling case for why “the adoption of agriculture was in many ways a catastrophe” in his 1987 Discover Magazine article “The Worst Mistake in the History of the Human Race,” however I am not convinced. An Agricultural Revolution is a “significant change in agriculture that occurs when there are discoveries, inventions, or new technologies that change production” (The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica, 2015) and the development of agriculture has been a fundamental part of the march of civilization. The Agricultural Revolution was not a catastrophe from which we have never recovered, it was the groundwork for the rise of civilization. Cynthia Stokes Brown, author of Big History- From The Big Bang To The Present states…

“America’s ‘Oh Sh*t!’ Moment”, written by Niall Ferguson, a historian who teaches at Harvard University, in 2011, explores why civilizations collapse, and how America can avoid this. He does not focus only on America, but many civilizations in the past that have collapsed. Niall Ferguson is the author of Civilization: The West and The Rest. The article is creatively and cleverly written using the metaphor of modern technology to describe the way in which the societal collapse occurs. This shows that the article was written for adults who are highly educated and understand and relate to technology. The article discusses the possibilities of what complete collapse would look like in American society. I believe the author successfully demonstrates and explains the very real possibility of America’s societal demise.…

The recent hurricanes, Katrina and Rita, along with global warming amplify Jared Diamond's thesis in "The Last Americans" that humans are responsible for the downfall of civilizations. Throughout history, many civilizations have collapsed due to numerous reasons such as incompetent leaders and environmental negligence. Many people view the United States' current environmental crisis with apathy. These people feel that the environmental collapse of ancient societies such as the Mayans is only pertinent to the present day decline of distant countries such as Somalia and Afghanistan; but in fact the United States is being equally affected. Diamond suggests that the future of the country lies in our hands and not in some intangible force that surrounds us.…

"And that opportunity played a critical role in their success" (30 Gladwell). Many times, people will argue that if you want something, you can achieve it simply through hard work; however, that is not always the case. In Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers, he explains the significant amount of opportunities that successful people are given. Gladwell uses the example of Joe Flom to explain how timing is a huge factor in success. Early in his career, he was declined by a huge law firm, and had to settle for a firm that was just starting out. Even though this seems like a disadvantage, it turned into an opportunity because the new law firm turned out to grow into one of the best. Another example used in Outliers would…

Our current economy and civilization is unstable. The CO2 emissions, reproduction rates, and food production is alarming. In the lecture it stated that “estimates are that global demand is now 30% higher than that which is sustainable.” That means we are short food, and it is not looking good for the future. We are unable to produce food quickly, the temperatures are rising, and people are still uneducated about how the things they are doing impact our future. I think in times like these it would only take a small trigger to push people over the edge, which could impact civilization as we know it.…

People tend to do three things when faced with a problem: they get afraid or uncomfortable and wish it would go away; they feel that they have to come up with an answer and it has to be the right answer; and they look for someone to blame. Being faced with a problem becomes a problem. And that 's a problem because, in fact, there are always going to be problems!…

The Kiwanis International Club held a survey where they asked when is it important to help out others? 75% of people believe in helping others when it will have an important impact on not only their lives but on other people's lives. When asked what type of community service makes the biggest difference, ⅔ answered hands on activities such as donating supplies, volunteering with a local service club, or participating in local community events have a bigger influence than just giving out money (Most Americans Believe One Can Can Change the World). Today, because of the sacrifices and achievements of many strong leaders, others now have their independence from countries, they have the right to vote, improved working conditions, or just an opportunity to be a better person. According to the survey on volunteerism done by the Kiwanis International Club, 86% of Americans believe one person can make a change (“Most Americans Believe One Can Change the World”). If this many people believe that humans are capable of making a change in the world, then the only thing stopping us from improving the world is us. As a quote by an anonymous person states “If you’re searching for that one person who will change your life...take a look in the mirror”; humans are the future of the world, and to live prosperous lives, we should be willing to help improve not only our living conditions, but to not be selfish and lend a helping hand to others in need as well. What the world is molded into is because of us, and as John F. Kennedy once said, “Making a positive difference in our own life or the lives of others, organizations, and the world at large starts with a healthy mind, body, and spirit, and a change of daily thoughts, communications, and actions of our own self…

“The best wat to not feel hopeless is to get up and do something. Don’t wait for good things to happen to you. If you go out and make some good things happen, you will fill the world with hope, you will fill yourself with hope.” – Barack Obama. This quote by Barack Obama, relates to the movie Pay It Forward by Mimi Leder made in 2000, in the way that Trevor did not wait for good to happen to him, he just went out and started helping out. The little boy Trevor wants to start a movement called pay it forward, were one person helps another person and that one person has to help out three other people and so forth. Paying it forward could actually work in real life, but we need someone to actually start the movement, which is the first step to…

The premise of Robert D. Kaplan’s book, The Coming of Anarchy offers a multitude of his dire assessment on potential future catastrophic views of the decline of our society leading to eventual anarchy and the destruction of our planet. The views of Kaplan on events leading us to eventual anarchy as “he addressed in the reading of The International Security Environment is crime, overpopulation, tribalism and disease.”1 I offer a different perspective by suggesting that the catastrophic events depicted by Kaplan will most likely only manifest itself, due to the resulting loss or massive food and water shortages or the dramatic loss of our current global geography.…

We as human beings are very fortunate to be living on this planet that we call Earth. We toil over the land, and in return we receive provisions off of which we live. Even though we get all that we need from this bountiful land, we still for some reason feel like we need to alter it. In doing so we also end up ruining the land that we thrive on. We reshape the world to fit our individual needs, and the earth just doesn’t work that way. Everything on this planet has a purpose, from the largest animal to the microscopic bacteria, and without it, it is impossible to live in harmony. In “Arizona and New Mexico”, a text written by Aldo Leopold, he talks about how man has developed the untouched land in the White Mountains of Arizona and killed animals in New Mexico, and now the lands are trodden on and it is not at all the way it used to be. In “A Very Warm Mountain”, a text written by Ursula K. Le Guin, she writes about how the earth is destroying itself because of what the human s have already done to the land, by the eruption of Mt. Saint Helens and there is nothing that we as humans can do about it. The Earth is being destroyed everyday whether it is by humans or the earth itself. There are both devastating and dramatic…
