Formerly known as Asperger syndrome and pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS); ASD is an undefined and cluster of multiple symptoms: cognitive, communicative, and sensory. According to Morrison (2014), “Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a heterogeneous neurodevelopmental disorder with widely varying degrees and manifestations that has both genetic and environmental causes.” Symptoms of ASD can be seen in children as early as 6 months of age. However, not all children show signs early some children don’t show symptoms until 2 years of age. Many students due to the lack of knowledge and acceptance about ASD many children aren’t diagnoses or introduced to early interventions until they enter school, and even then some students may go under the raider because their high intellectual ability. Some symptoms that might be seen in students with ASD are: unable to play pretend games, avoid eye contact, trouble interrupting the feelings of others (including non-verbal communication), having trouble with delayed speech and language skills, over reacts to change is schedule or routine, obsessive interest, and answers questions with unrelated answers. In my experience these students lack peer communication, they often have no friends, and some prefer to play alone, peers or adults cannot comfort when they become upset. Individuals with ASD may suffer acutely from some symptoms and mildly from…

During the late 19th Century, people believed that the Native Americans would not adapt to modernity and die out. Those people were wrong. The Native Americans not only adapted but they survived and endured everything life had to throw at them. The United States Government made life quite hard for the Indians in many ways. The United States expanded its territory in the early 19th Century to the Mississippi River. Due to the Gadsden purchase, this led to US control of the borderlands of Arizona and southern New Mexico, along with authority over Oregon country, Texas and California. During 1830 and 1860 America continued to expand, nearly doubling in size. Settlers began building their lives in the Great Plains along with other parts of the…

“1 in 5 people are or have been a bully or bullied’ according to “Meet the New Sheriff.” That way too many. In my opinion, when there is a bully, victim, and a bystander the bully can do the worst damage! Either if it is done physically, verbally, or even exclusion it is very harmful to the victim. Bullies can hurt people very badly. The victim is like a wounded soldier in a battle field with nowhere to go!…

conducted an investigation into parents of children with ASDs perceptions, and satisfaction, with the education their children were receiving. Participants were 144 parents of children who had a diagnosis of an ASD, and were currently enrolled in a mainstream school. Mothers, as opposed to fathers or both parents, completed 89.9% of the surveys. It was fount that 15.4% of children had been suspended, and all parents believed the reasoning behind it was the school staff’s inability to deal with the child’s behaviour. Furthermore, aggression committed by the child was a common reasoning for suspension. However, parents generally felt that the suspension occurred unnecessarily as the child’s behaviour was not dealt with adequately (p.210). This could suggest that children with ASDs should be educated in special schools, as the staff may be more understanding and better prepared for helping the child with any aggressive outbursts they may have. Moreover, it could be argued that special schools are more appropriate for children with ASDs as they will be with staff, and in an environment, that is better suited to their overall needs. Consequently, this could decrease the amount of exclusions, which will benefit the child, as they are detrimental to their education. However, this means that parents may feel forced to send their child to a special school, even if they don’t want to, due to the fear of their child not being fully supported in a mainstream…

Bullying is a traumatic issue schools are having in today’s society. Sometimes a bully will act the way they do because they have problems going on at home or are just acting out. Boy’s and younger middle school students are most likely to be bullied (Santrock, 2013). Children who say they are bullied tend to be lonely and have difficulty making friends, while the bully has low grades, smoke cigarettes, and drink alcohol (Santrock, 2013). Researchers have found that anxious, socially withdrawn, and aggressive children are often the victims of bullying situations (Santrock, 2013). Anxious and socially withdrawn children are usually bullied because they are not conceived as a threat and will not retaliate, while aggressive children will be bullied because their behavior may be irritating to the bully (Santrock, 2013).…
