According to EdD Anne Bishop (1997), nursing is “at all times an artful practice and applied science that are integrally woven into the fabric of the practice of caring” (p.4). This statement about the components of nursing I agree with. I believe that nursing is not singly a science, practice or art, but it is a combination of all three. Nursing is part of the medical field; its science is knowledge that’s attained through research, development and analysis. With regards to art, nurses must be creative with their knowledge of caring for patients. Every patient’s case is different and not always “a text book case” so nurses have to be ready and resourceful with thinking of solutions. The main focus of a nurse’s practice is caring. It involves concern and empathy, and a commitment to the client’s lived experience of human health and the relationships among wellness, illness, and disease (Mitchell, 2000). I believe that one day when I become a nurse, to do my job and duties for my patients I must efficiently combine practice, art and science of nursing.…

Nursing is much more than a job; it is a lifetime career path. One does not step lightly into the field of nursing just to further their financial gains. As quoted by Florence Nightingale, “Nursing is an art… it requires an exclusive devotion as hard a preparation, as any painter’s or sculptor’s work; for what is the having to do with dead canvas or dead marble, compared with having to do with the living body, the temple of God’s spirit?” Developing the art of nursing requires commitment and planning. A professional development plan for a nurse is essential to guide the nurse successfully throughout his/her career.…

Reflecting on the past two years of nursing school, my philosophy of nursing has been reshaped from when I had first started the nursing program. Though the fundamental aspect of my philosophy has not changed, my horizon has been broadened to see the beauty behind the nursing profession. Florence Nightingale once said that “Nursing is an art, and if it is to be made an art, it requires an exclusive devotion as hard a preparation, as any painter 's or sculptor 's work; for what is the having to do with dead canvas or dead marble, compared with having to do with the living body, the temple of God 's spirit? It is one of the Fine Arts” (Bolen, 2009). I had almost said the finest of Fine Arts.” Her belief in the nursing profession has been the core reason for most of my beliefs. Through the academic studies and hands on…

312); I think that is what defines us as nurses in the healthcare field. It is the nurse 's responsibility to incorporate our knowledge, skills and available resources, so we can improve our patient 's quality of life. The American Nurses Association, ANA, defines nursing as "the protection, promotion, optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury" (Lance, 2007, p. 11). I try to incorporate these elements into my nursing practice; practicing my profession with care, compassion, and…

Nursing is a career not just a job, nursing is treating people as a disease, but as a unique individual who has his/her own values, beliefs, needs, and also treat the family with respect, compassion, patience, and show that we care. I chose nursing because I have always liked helping people. Ever since I was a little girl I liked helping and I would tell my dad that if he was ever sick I would take care of him so he could get better. At first I wanted to be a doctor, a pediatrician to be exact, but I chose nursing because, nurses have more contact with patients and nursing school is shorter than medical school. I know I made the right choice because as I have been doing clinicals, I have been falling more and more in love with what nurses do, but throughout the process I have also seen what kind of nurse I do not want to be. During clinicals there was an agency nurse a patient did…
