During, my internship at Leake and Watts in the Foster Care Unit I was able to learn the basics about this social issue that seems to increase year after year. Also, I learned that even though it is a big non profit organization; they also go through the hardship of not having funds to run the program with short staff. I created an excellent professional relation with the Program Director of the unit and with the Director of Operation of the program who happens to be one of my professors at Bronx Community College. They advised me and recommended me for a position in the UMC (unaccompanied Migrant Children) as a Youth Care Worker; I got the job immediately. It was my first hands on experience in the field. I learned so much about how this temporary foster care system works. I worked with the undocumented children, at the same time I was helping out the other programs, ADHD and Juvenile Delinquency. I did like working in this setting and I earned so much patience and courage working with all these children. It is not easy 8 hours of your day, telling children to “stop” “don’t do that” “eat your food” day after day. However, I did not feel comfortable for the goals that the agency propose. Most of the children were court mandated. I feel about this that they do not need that separation from their parents, there are different approaches. I was grateful and I earned lots of experience in that field, nonetheless I will not work in this
