I immigrated with my parents from South Korea when I was an elementary student. Then, I did not understand the weight of my parent’s decision or the struggles that we will soon face. In addition to the common language and cultural barriers, our family experienced poverty. My mom sacrificed her well-paying nurse practitioner job in Korea to make nothing in America. My parents struggled to find good jobs and secured low wage, low-skilled jobs. Even through this time, I was never discouraged or embarrassed at our financial status. I struggled and gave up activities to conserve money, but I knew that I have a loving family and a bright future ahead. I know that although it is difficult, I will see through and preserve for my dream and family. I look forward to becoming a Drexel Alumni and looking back at my hectic, but memorable undergraduate experience. As Drexel has been an integral part of my life already, I believe that I will never be able to really remove myself from this experience. I hope to continue even after I become a registered nurse to support Drexel undergraduate students. I know that I have not been able to continue on my college journey without the help from knowledgeable alumni who have donated their time, expertise, and money to me. Therefore, I hope to stay connected and give back to the younger generations below me with the alumni program. In addition, nursing alumni always tend to come back for nursing students. Mentorship and teaching is such an important part of being a nurse, and I believe it is a responsibility to share wisdom with those with less experience.
