After reading through all previous chapters, you probably understand how important it is to know why you’re going to college. However, you might still be unconvinced. Why go through so much trouble? Can’t I just go to college and hope for the best? Even if I don’t have a clear cut plan or reason, isn’t it okay to go anyways?
You wouldn’t do anything else that matters with no plan
To go or not to go to college. This question can be a big turning point for your life. On one hand, you could come out of college with a career, friends and amazing memories. On the other hand, you could come out with no job prospects, depressed and even more lost than before. Those 4(or more) years can have a big impact on the …show more content…
I really didn’t have to, but at the time that’s what I thought. All of my classmates in highschool had chosen mayors already and were applying to lots of schools. So I couldn’t fall behind by not applying. Except I really had no interest in any particular career. There was nothing I really wanted to do, and no real reason to enroll in college. But since my parents, teachers, friends and other family members said I needed to go, I simply chose something in the liberal arts and called it a day. I didn’t think there was anything wrong with that, things would just work out somehow. That was until I started going to class. I soon realized I might have made a mistake. Classes were long, dull and mostly lifeless. Even subjects I thought would interest me became too boring to bother with. The few people I met weren’t very fun to be around, and I missed my old friends. And most of all, I had no future in sight. I had no idea how any of what I was doing would pay off. In our day and age of everyone goes to college, people expect you to have a diploma too. That wasn’t always the case, but it’s become like that recently. With less people going to college over the last few years though, that could change. In any case, don’t panic when challenged over not having a degree. Simply think to yourself: why is this person criticizing my life choices? Are they someone who cares about me and thinks I messed up? If your plan didn’t work out, that could be the case. But if you’re doing well without higher education, then the reason might be: they’re either jealous that you chose something else, or want to feel superior. If it’s the latter, pay them no mind. Your income, career and life satisfaction are much more important than a piece of paper. If said piece of paper has helped you with the above, then it’s important. If you didn’t need one, then it’s not important. That would be like a fisherman bragging to a farmer about his boat. The farmer doesn’t need the boat to take care of his farm. So why would he care about not having something he doesn’t need?
