first time we attended the nursing home, I was extremely nervous to see if the experience would be as I had imagined. The elderly people sat in their wheel chairs lining the halls of the nursing home. They watched as the whole class walked in, I could see the wonder on their faces, concerned as to why we were there. We quickly started working; we changed their clothes, gave them baths, fed them, and helped them move around safely. The residents were all so sweet and thankful, they weren’t used to younger people taking care of them, but they liked and appreciated us for being so gentle with them. When we were there, I knew we were brightening their day, and they loved us. I was working hard for this! Becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant was my main priority. I loved it! Sitting and talking with the elders was amazing, they had plenty of stories to tell and they loved telling them. Some told stories about being younger, being involved in war, getting married, and having children. As I grew closer to them the more I enjoyed learning about their lives and what they accomplished throughout their years. I found myself regularly asking more and more questions. I was so interested, and wanted to know everything about them. Some had old pictures of when they were younger, and it’s astounding to see how quickly life goes by. There was a gentleman named Mr. Harris that spoke to me every time I visited, and during one of those conversations he really made an impact on my views of life. We discussed many topics that made me realize that he is one of the most extraordinary people I have ever met. He talked about life, and how you should enjoy it; he explained to me that the best thing you could do was to get a job that you loved doing and be successful at it. The gentleman was one hundred and one years old and very wise beyond my years. It made me realize that the man’s mental ability could not be judged due to his age. I became attached and knew that I wanted to help people and become close to them; it’s the most rewarding thing I have ever done. Becoming a Certified Nurse’s Assistant is one of many choices I’ve made in my life, and by joining this class and taking care of people I’ve finally realized what I want to do when I grow up. More than anything I want to care for people and help them; therefore I plan on getting a degree in nursing. Like Mr. Harris said, “Do something you love doing, and be successful at it!” Caring for people is what I want to do, and is what I enjoy to the highest degree.
