The ancient Greeks made lavish use of perfumes and cosmetics in their religious rites, in grooming, and for medicinal purposes. They built elaborate baths and developed excellent methods of dressing the hair and caring for the skin and nails. Greek women applied preparations of white lead on their faces, kohl on their eyes, and vermilion on their cheeks and lips. The brilliant red pigment was made by grinding cinnabar, a mineral that is the chief source of mercury, to a fine powder. It was mixed with ointment or dusted on the skin in the same way as modern cosmetics are applied…

We were attending our next-door neighbors BBQ, that we had never met, and the family had just recently moved in and we were invited to a house warming party. As my daughter went to get a drink in the back yard, a pit bull, which was on a leash, jumped at her, knocking her down. The dog bit and mangled her hand before letting go. This attack has had an enormous effect on her and my family. Our daughter was taken by ambulance to Memorial Hospital where the ER doctor evaluated her. He immediately called in the hand surgeon due to the severity of the wound. The hand specialist took Ashlyn into surgery immediately to clean and to stitch up the wound. A second surgery occurred a week later. It consisted of re-opening the wound, cutting an additional one-inch down the length of her pinkie finger, locating the severed nerve and re-attaching it using a nerve…

Hello my name is Chassidy Mitchem I would absolutely love to be a part of your cosmetology program. I love to do hair and, make up. Doing hair is something I enjoy doing in my free time. It’s a way to get away from people and let my mind explore into better things. I enjoy looking and trying new hair styles and colors. I have done makeup and hair for Homecoming court and Grand March. It would be an absolute dream to get into this school and have some hands on time with the things I love doing while learning more about Cosmetology. Cosmetology is very important to the world because someone will always want their hair done or make up done. Most people only want to go to a professional so they know they will be getting the best of their money. You could also be able to set up your own business around your area. I differ from a lot of my peers because no one really understands the importance of Cosmetology the way I do. Everyone thinks it useless. Cosmetology is just as important as other jobs because someone will always need you. There will always be someone needing their eye brows done or maybe there nails especially during homecoming and prom or even a wedding. I’ve talked to a couple people and got some really interesting opinions. Some people has told me I wouldn’t make it and some people has told me I would, but my motto is “Never give up, because you never know how close you are to fulfilling your dream.” I plan on getting this degree and opening my own salon and I feel that it will give me knowledge I need to know for success. I learned to do this at a young age and I feel very strong about this career. I believe this will be the field I dedicate myself to. I hope to be attending this college at whatever time the school year would…

I had finally been given the opportunity to continue my higher education at an American institution. I knew that this was the chance I had been waiting for: the chance to study dentistry in a country where oral hygiene is incredibly important. However, there were several hurdles along the way I needed to overcome. Initially, I was completely unaware of how the American education system operated. My poor background in the English language made it even harder to overcome this obstacle. To add to this stress, my father was diagnosed with acute arthritis in his neck; a cervical spine fusion in C6 and C7 was pinching the nerve in his right arm, which was causing it to go numb. He wasn’t able to work and went through an extensive amount of painful physical therapy. The circumstances made it harder for me to focus on my dreams. Unfortunately, I had to work fulltime while I was still a fulltime student in college, which was detrimental to my grades. However, I worked even harder and by the time I was a junior in college, I was maintaining dean’s list as a full time student, while working…

I am thankful for all people who go to a cosmetology school to get their hair done. Without them, cosmetology students wouldn’t be able to get the practice they desperately need before going out into a real salon. However, when you come into a school you must sign a waiver that says the student is not responsible for any mistakes made. We’re well trained, but we’re not professionals. Not everyone realizes this. Some of these clients are brutal. Take it from me. I went to cosmetology school, and there, I met all sorts of awful clients. Whether it’s the Elderly Perfectionists, the Know It Alls, or the Cinderella Wannabees, these clients don’t care who you are, they’ll eat you up and spit you out alive.…

When I grow up I would love to become a cosmetologist. I have always been interested in styling mine, and others’ hair since I was a little girl. My aunt is a cosmetologist and I have always delighted in watching her delicately and gracefully cut, color, and style people’s hair. Once in awhile she will show me different techniques she has taught herself, or learned in school, and even discuss schooling with me. She says I am more than welcome to move to Lawrence and live with her and attend the award winning beauty school there in Lawrence. Everytime we get the chance to talk on this subject I get excited. Her helping and teaching me has inspired me in so many ways for the reason that it makes me feel as though this dream is actually in reach.…

The books that have had the greatest impacts on me are Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman (it is a series of books which I have read all) and To kill a Mocking Bird by. These books are influential to me because both books target themes of racial discrimination and love, friendship, depression, prejudice, violence, and power abuse. Both novels portray a world where it is completely acceptable to discriminate against people because of the colour of their skin. Both novels also have societies which are predicated on ignorance and where there is an unjust status quo. They books convey worlds where they have divisive societies, one class viewing themselves to be superior to the other.…

One of the worst injuries that has ever occurred to me was having my fingers burned by extremely hot water. It was a cold, dark day at 7:31pm, and it was just me, my older brother, Gideon, and my younger brother, Theodore. I was 9 years old, Theodore was 2 years old, and Gideon was 12 years old. Every day I would drink some hot tea, because I tended to be extremely sensitive to the cold. And when I say sensitive, I am talking about that if I was drinking regular temperature water, I would be shivering probably throughout the rest of the night. Gideon was doing homework at the basement, while Theodore was sleeping in my parents’ bedroom. I was making myself some hot tea, when I accidentally poured hot water on my hand for 2 seconds. Now 2 seconds seem like nothing, but when something like…
