Importance of the Academic Honor Code An academic honor code is a set of rules to follow in an academic community based on what the community views as ideal. An academic honor code is crucial to school life because it creates a foundation which the students will build their success upon through diligence and dedication. The honor codes are to guide the students on how to live in the community mainly to respect everyone within the community and grow as a person. They also establish the ideals which create independence and academic excellence within their community. The codes which they follow, allow for the guidelines of success in their school. The academic honor code allows a person to mature and become responsible. They use this code as a basis to grow. Some honor codes enforce independence as this will create more responsibilities for an individual. Some students just believe that they need a good grade to pass and succeed. Thinking this could cause them to plagiarize, copy, cheat, or find some other short cut to pass the class. Most schools enforce the rule to not cheat or plagiarize. The University of Dayton says, “Cheating on an assignment consists of willfully copying or attempting to copy all or part of another student's assignment or having someone else complete the assignment when class assignments are such that students are expected to complete the assignment on their own.” (Dayton) This shows that it a valuable trait that will be beneficial to the student. This will teach the student to do their own work and it will allow them to learn the subject for themselves rather than from someone else. The honor code prevents students from slacking and allows for students to learn for
