Why Is Affirmative Action Necessary
Affirmative action is still necessary because it was affective for helping minorities, it has the potential to start ending poverty, and bring the lower class to the middle class. When John F. Kennedy signed the Executive Order 10925, it begin a change for diversity in employment and education. This order was very effective to help races such African-Americans and Latinos find jobs and go to college who have been discriminated in the past. This action was very necessary at the time, but quickly leveled out diversity so much that today universities will turn down a specific race to level out even if a person has a higher academics. This is why Affirmative Action is so important but needs to be changed for economic classes. “He found that the most selective schools, instead of affirmative action, began using socioeconomic preferences, including family income and whether students were the first in their family to go to college. And in doing so, about 20 percent of the loss in minority admissions rates at Berkeley and 30 percent at UCLA were offset by changes in the admissions process” (Camera). This information proves that we can start making changes to the Affirmative Action plan to give people who are the first generation college students a better chance of getting in, impacting poverty as a whole for all races. Affirmative action has done its work for shaping a diverse country, but this does not mean it should go away entirely. The impact it has had in America can easily be changed to impact it again in a way where we need it today. Bringing up are lower economic classes is in are nations best interests if we want fair opportunity for everyone.     Why do we need affirmative action? It is common sense to say that people should naturally be judged on their merits, without consideration of other factors such as race, gender, or ethnicity, or even any other factor that does not relate directly to professional or academic performance.     In a country the size of the United States, different races and different views on the equality of each race exist. Affirmative Action was a put in place by the Federal Government to help conserve the protection of rights towards minorities, whether it be determined by race or sex, during the time after the civil war when they people were still being discriminated upon based on these two aspects. Affirmative Action created a situation that allowed minorities a guaranteed spot within a workplace or a school, eliminating racism and allowing the minority to be recognized for its accomplishments. This may not have been the best solution for the problem but at the time it was put in place it was a necessary mean to try and correct an evil. Affirmative Action is still in place today even though it shouldn’t be. It creates discrimination by trying to get rid of it. Administration officers and CEO’s of companies feel the need to fill the percentage that they were given so they turn their backs on more qualified persons. With Affirmative Action, a white man may lose a chance to get a job or go to college, simply because the position must be filled with a black man, to meet the designated quota assigned. Also majorities look down on the minorities who get into colleges and get jobs over them by saying that they only got the job because someone just needed to get the spot filled so that they wouldn’t get shut down. This makes the minority feel worse about themselves because really don’t know if they got into the school or got the job based on their own merits or not. People in todays society want to make the most money possible so they will hire who they believe will do the best job whether it be an African American woman or a middle aged white man.     Affirmative action is supposed to help minorities that want to go to college but financially can’t. “Affirmative action policies do not necessarily help economically disadvantaged students. A study by the Hoover Institution found that affirmative action tends to benefit middle- and upper-class minorities” (“Affirmative Action: Overview”). If this plan was created to help the worst of the worst, then why isn’t it trying to accommodate for those needs? If someone is in the middle or upper-class, then they shouldn’t necessary be categorized as “minorities”. This is putting true minorities at a disadvantage because they don’t even fit into their own category. Affirmative action should take care off all disadvantaged students, including those who need it the most. Not only does affirmative action tend to not help minorities but it may be unconstitutional. As it says in the Civil Rights Act of 1964, “Title VI, 42 U.S.C. § 2000d et seq., was enacted as part of the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964. It prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, and national origin in programs and activities receiving federal financial assistance,” (Title IV of the Civil Rights).     “Minimally qualified is a far cry from equally or best qualified (the backlash)". This brings us to the question of whether it is right to let minimally qualified students into colleges because they are more likely to fail then the more qualified students are. Would you want a minimally qualified doctor treating you for an illness, or half rate teacher instructing your child (the backlash)? Affirmative action thusly brings about poorer quality in generally every aspect of life. If you’re in New York and you get a cab your driver may not be qualified for his job and he may not know all the little shortcuts. So, it may end up taking an extra 30 minutes to get to your location. Or maybe, a detective was a less qualified person who got his job and he doesn’t find your missing child as a result. Perhaps, your surgeon was less qualified when he applied to medical school and he ends up causing havoc when operating on you and you die! Are you still skeptical? Well its true, the “New Jersey State Police have tried to comply with the ‘dumbed down’ racial hiring requirements imposed by the U.S. Department of Justice and legal threats by the NAACP, but many of the minority applicants still failed the easier application requirements (Diamond, 2000). That’s right the New Jersey police department is limiting requirements needed to get into the “force” because of the limited minorities applying for work. They have even lowered the college education levels from 4 years to 2 years. This means that all the people in New Jersey have fresh new recruits that will be less equipped in handling the criminals (Diamond, 2000).
