Think of the first amendment, what comes to mind? What liberties and independences were stated that still apply to America today? The first Amendment can be considered the most Amendment to Americans. Amendment one was published in the Constitution of the United States in 1789, and then it revised again in 1992. It states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances”. To put it plainly, this means that freedoms concerning religion, expression, assembly and the right to petition are guaranteed to all Americans. Furthermore, amendment one forbids congress from both promoting one religion over others and also restricting an individuals religious practices, according to https://www.law.cornell.edu/constitution/first_amendment. Additionally, amendment one guarantees the right of citizens to assemble peacefully and grants the right to petition their government. This is something we see especially often, especially in todays society due to some of the decisions the government has made in the recent months. thanks to Amendment one, they have a right to petition without being hurt, killed or kept prisoner, as is seen in other countries to people who speak out against their government.
Amendment one was established in the first place because when the first Americans came here by boat from England, they were escaping King George the third and his restrictions on speaking against the government the right to practice whichever religion that the people wanted.
Under his rule in England, the people were under suppressed speech, especially any form of speech that went against the crown and Kings George the thirds rule. So, the founding fathers and more soon to be Americans set out to a new land where they could practice whichever religion they wished, speak freely about their government and live their lives in freedom, not under the rule of a
king.
An example of Amendment one in action can go all the way back to the tragedy of September 11th, 2001. Controversy began that stated the terrorists were targeting Muslim Americans and sparked speculation that the terrorist act was or was not an act of religious persecution against Muslims. The first amendment protected the right of Muslim Americans to continue to practice their religion freely, and not be kicked out of the country. If the first Amendment had not existed, it could have started a war in America to get the Muslims to leave due to unnecessary suspicion. The first Amendment kept America together in the toughest of times.
In conclusion, the First Amendment is the most important to Americans to protect the rights we sometimes take for granted. The right to protest, the right to speak out against our government with no prosecution. The right to religion and to practice as people wish. Though it was published in 1789, the first amendment is still used everyday by every American and will remain the very important for the rest of Americas History.
