Sleep is very important to the regulation of the body 's functions. Sleep is regulated by circadian rhythms. The circadian rhythm is controlled in the brain by an area called the suprachiasmatic nucleus which controlls around 20,000 neurons. These rhythms determine the ideal times for structured and restorative sleep and are generlly in 24 hour cycles. The exact functions of sleep are not exactly known however, those who are sleep deprived have been found to have weakened immune systems and poor brain function. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (2007), sleep gives neurons used while we are awake time to repair and that without this shutdown time they become depleted of energy and begin to malfunction. Sleep is also believed to give the brain a chance to exercise important connections that might otherwise deteriorate due to inactivity.…

I had participated in meditation before and it had refreshed me a lot, but nothing was a good as the feeling I received when I stood up from our body scan relaxation. Focusing on individual parts of my body wasn’t easy, as each time I would relax something, another thing would tense. But throughout the program of meditation, slowly I felt myself improving.…

And these are not mere assumptions of probing, brilliant minds. They are laws of the cosmos. As God's force of gravity shapes cosmic order, karma shapes experiential order. Our long sequence of lives is a tapestry of creating and resolving karmas-positive, negative and an amalgam of the two. During the succession of a soul's lives-through the mysteries of our higher chakras and God's and Guru's Grace-no karmic situation will arise that exceeds an individual's ability to resolve it in love and understanding.…

The ritual I chose from Tibetan Buddhism was Meditation for this my friend and I took a introduction to meditation session at the Shambhala Meditation Center of Montreal. This session is for people with no experience or just need to be guided into the right way of doing meditation. The center teaches the practice and study of Shambhala Buddhism originally conceived by Chögyam Trungpa which are mainly the teachings of Tibetan Buddhism. In Buddhism meditation is an important part of their religion as its essential to the teachings of Buddha so meditating is a part of the everyday lives of many Buddhist followers; they meditate everyday for a decent amount of time ,actual Buddhist practitioners can meditate for 2-3 hours strait but regular city dwelling Buddhist do it for less time , nevertheless it is still effective. As our meditation guide said " we all have different backgrounds so there are many reason to why you have chosen to meditate .... it doesn't matter... as long as you meditate" but the main purpose (or general idea) of doing so is to clean one’s mind from anything stressful in one’s life, to develop an awareness for life and things that surround us, in order to relieve the strain on the brain for our busy lifestyles and to be able to easily relax or concentrate ,to face our lives better prepared.…

Engaging in meditation was my first transformational practice. I specifically chose mantra meditation as the form to undertake. Although mantra meditation techniques may vary, I decided to focus my attention on the repeated chant of the “Om” mantra and let my mind become as free from thoughts as possible. The idea is to free yourself from negative thoughts and find peace of mind, which can potentially offer a variety of benefits . It was my hope that these benefits would specifically include reducing stress and improving my sleep quality. To this end, I practiced the mantra meditation 3 times a week.…
