Why Is Correctional Counseling Important

Why is correctional counseling important? It is important to assure that criminals still get the best help possible, counselors do not only advise and mentor them, but also help them live a normal life after being released from prison, jail, private corrections, or juvenile facilities. Without correctional counselors, offenders would not know how to change to be successful in society and they would struggle rehabilitation or relapse soon after being released. Many would be jobless, possibly homeless, and more than likely go back to the same group of people who provoked him or her to commit the crimes that sent them to prison. Since counselors help create treatment plans and help the individuals achieve relevant goals, they are important in offenders’ rehabilitation and placement in the community. Counseling also helps offenders overcome and understand issues with family, law, jobs, relationships, education, and possibly mental health, which gives them a new perspective about their surroundings and themselves as a person. This means that counseling can help with reducing recidivism, which is the probability of offenders repeating the same crime. Overall offenders would not
Counseling has helped reduced risk and will continue to help with more research and theories were developed. This concept is interesting to me and is relevant to what I would like to do as a career. To me, it is important to understand the law, the people who break it, and how the lawbreakers can be taught what's right and wrong.
