Abstract
Every year, more and more colleges have a way to set up housing for upcoming freshmen for the school year. But in most cases, housing at ERAU is way more expensive than what is expected of housing at a credible college. For instance, when it rains on campus, Doolittle Hall floods and most of the …show more content…
floors on the hall get really wet and nasty. Another instance of where the price of housing is unacceptable is the mold that appears on top of McKay Hall. Parents pay a lot of money out of pocket just to send their children to school; with incidents like this happening, it makes most people wonder is housing really worth paying 2,000 a semester really an affordable cost? Freshmen ended up paying a lot of money for housing and most of the necessities are not even include in the rooms.
Introduction
Every year, high school graduates from all across the U.S open a letter of acceptance into a credible university and the first emotion that hits them is joy.
Months past and it’s that time for those students to embark on a new journey in their lives. When they arrive on campus, the first thing that they do is find the room they will be staying in and immediately began to unpack and get settled in their new residence. Most parents receive letters in the mail explaining how much they owe at the end of the semester and the one thing that pops up on the list is the cost of housing per semester. For most parents in the U.S, they already have to worry about paying for classes at ERAU, which cost roughly around $5,000 a class plus meal plans, health center, SGA, and other minor things. The topic of my Analytical Report is to find valid facts on why the housing at ERAU costs so much for what it is worth. Within my report, I will explain the outcomes of why housing has become so expensive and also ways that students have handled the reality of paying for
housing.
As a freshman that lives in the dorm, I have heard lots of speeches by upperclassman and also alumni that attended ERAU and asked them is housing really worth paying for and the response is always the same, which is it is not worth $2,000. I then continued to ask them why is not worth paying; and the response was that when you live on campus, most of the things that you had back home are not at your disposal, this is a specific time you can talk and specific time you have to stay quiet, and most of the dorms have only one bathroom and you have to share with three other people and in most cases, one of your roommates is possibly not the cleanliness.
Within the topic of uncovering why housing is so expensive at ERAU, I will uncover problems such as how housing calculates the prices of housing, the durability and appearance of the residence halls, and also the difference between housing costs and off campus costs.
Methodology
By using multiple resources, I have come up with an effective plan of researching this topic to its fullest extent. Within this report, I will examine, explain, and evaluate the housing situation at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. The research I conducted was very informative throughout because it made an unclear topic perfectly clear and concise. This research will explain to the students why housing is expensive and also how housing prices are calculated.
Primary Research
In order for me to find the research in order to find why housing at ERAU is so expensive, I first had to reach out to my fellow ERAU students to hear their opinion about the cost of housing. Some of classmates felt like the university could lower the cost of housing because they feel that pay way too much to live in a residence where they don’t keep the halls clean. Freshmen responded by saying that housing is way too much for the things that are include in the freshmen dorms. For instance, in the freshmen dorm rooms, there are is no oven for students to warm or cook food in their dorm, the bunk beds are either on the brink of falling apart or they are already in bed shape, and the air conditioner has to be on at all times or mold will grow within the rooms.
Using SurveyMonkey, I created a survey for my ERAU classmates to fill out and out of the 20 people that filled out the survey about 85% agreed that are paying way more than what the dorms are actually worth. The other 15% stated that they were happy with being on campus but due to the way the dorms look and how the residence halls are dirty, they agreed with the with 85% stating restating that the dorms are way more expensive than they appear. I established these criteria by simply researching facts on Delicious and finding out just how the university goes about determining the costs of housing to the residences.
Figure 1A: Room and Board Costs at ERAU Item: | Semester | Year | Room: | $2,675 | $5,350 | Board | $1,850 | $3,700 | Total | $4,525 | $9,050 |
In Figure 1A, the cost of housing at ERAU is shown in the figure. This includes the semester and yearly costs of living on campus.
In Figure 1B, this graph shows the inflation of not only tuition and fees, but also medical costs and the cost of living at private universities. The cost of living has increase over there years causing inflation.
To determine how the costs of housing were determined by the university, I conducted an online interview with the housing department to uncover how Residence Life handles calculating the costs for housing. Residence Life is there to determine the costs of housing and to help students with their accommodations into their dorms and make living on campus an enjoyable experience.
When determining to ask questions to the housing department, it was critical to unravel how the costs of housing affected the students who could not afford the costs of housing at Embry Riddle.

Secondary Resource
As for as researching a secondary resource, Delicious, Embry Riddle Solutions, and numerous other research engines helped me determine the costs of finding out how prices are determined for college housing. In comparison, a diagram was conducted at a large prestigious university and how they calculate prices to make housing more affordable to students who have a hard time affording costs of housing. Also, many student surveys responding to the housing epidemic at numerous universities were found. Not only did most of these resources uncover the issues of housing at major universities, it also established possible solutions to fix the high prices of college housing.
