Parks and protected areas are not large enough to support the numerous species, natural processes, and habitats necessary to fully conserve biodiversity, especially when human operations and the population is increasing. Therefore, wildlife populations are continuously decreasing. In some places, it is not easy to attempt resource sustainability, there are just some areas that should be protected and not utilized in any way. These are the areas with very rare species or that are rich in biodiversity, a prime example is Wapusk National Park of Canada.

Today, in 2017, a new management plan is being put into place. However, approximately 78% of the actions recommended in the previous plan have been implemented in the new plan. The main goal is to protect and maintain the natural systems, plants, wildlife and cultural resources as the natural state as possible. Since the health of the park is most important there are several objectives to maintain the ecological integrity in Wapusk. The cultural and historical resources must be identified and monitored. Human activities within the park must be managed without negatively impacting the ecological and cultural environment. The ecological integrity must be evaluated through research of the resources. The results than will be communicated between all research partnerships. The research partnerships must be done with care. Ensuring there are partnerships with the Indigenous communities, stakeholders and researchers are key to implementing this important strategy.
