Future development
The future for Kangaroo Point lies within its future developments.
Not only does Kangaroo Point developments need to coincide into the landscape surrounding, it is highly important to ensure that the surrounding environment is also protected. During the field visit, it was noted that there was minimal development within the area and a lack of parking available. The focal point was the stairs, with the café at the top of the cliff, with the bike and walking paths also becoming a focal point. Without these developments, there would not be too much within the suburb of Kangaroo Point. At the top of the cliffs, there is substantial housing, although it was noted that the space within the suburb was not used to its’ full advantage. After undertaking research and readings of the area, the Kangaroo Point Peninsula Plan looked to improve the developments of the area. The plan seeks to support growth within the residential community, improve the streetscape, and enhance the pedestrian and cycle links to parks and the Brisbane
River.
A major development that has been proposed for the suburb, are two 18-storey ‘self breathing’ residential apartment towers (TheUrbandeveloper.com, 2017). The positioning of this development is the Story Bridge end of the suburb, allowing for similar future developments to occur closer to the landmarks of the area, whilst creating another landmark within the suburb of Kangaroo Point.
Increasing residential area within Kangaroo Point is a key role in the development of the suburb, in doing so the streetscape, paths, parks and bikeways must also be enhanced. More activities can be developed within the area, to make the suburb more of a hub, where all things can be achieved in the one area. The river walk, and bikeways need upgrades, as well as more park activities introduced to also therefore make the streetscape more appealing. The streets and highways surrounding the suburb also need a ‘facelift’. The introduction of commercial and retail property, as well food precincts, will improve the functionality and overall look of the area.. To ensure Kangaroo Point can keep up with all future developments, the ability to access the area and the ability to park is also a key area needing improvement.
