Why Is Norman Bethune A Hero?
What comes to mind when envisioning the aspects of a hero? An innovator? A fearless fighter? While those elements can be true, loyal, dauntless and determined are more suitable to describe Norman Bethune. This Canadian doctor was born in Gravenhurst Ontario. He was idolized by citizens all over the country for his dedication and endless commitment towards his patients. During the Spanish Civil War, nearly 2000 Canadians travelled to Spain to fight for the Republic, and as a result, almost half didn’t return to their families back home. Bethune did his absolute best to try and help the soldiers recover faster, so they could continue fighting for the country. Norman attempted multiple inexperienced, unusual, and unique medical techniques on his patients to efficiently restore their health. His reputation as a hero and well-known success in Canada is partially a result of his fame in China. In 1938, he arrived in a base are of the Chinese Communist Party, in Yan’an, China. During his time in China, he managed to organize a mobile operating unit in North China. While attempting to maintain himself, there were multiple operations that he performed with having no sleep, that had a duration of almost 2 days. His compassion towards every single one of his patients is incredible, as he managed to save many lives of the Chinese soldiers. Bethune soon became a role model and leader to the Chinese citizens, soldiers, and even other doctors. An essay called “In Memory of Norman Bethune” which was written by Mao Zedong became popular internationally as a result of Norman’s incredible impact on society.
