Why Is Romeo And Juliet Considered A Tragedy

Romeo and Juliet should be considered as a tragedy more than a romance or love story. In Romeo and Juliet, there is an ongoing argument whether or not the story is meant to be a love story/romance or a tragedy. In my opinion, the story should be referred to as a tragedy and I will tell you why. This story involves the hatred from both families going around and also, fighting more than love. First, the story reveals the two rival families and has already been started as a tragedy. “Three civil brawls, bred of an airy word. By thee, old Capulet, and Montague. 1.1.80-81” This quote shows that both Montagues, Romeo’s family, and the Capulets, Juliet’s family, are enemies. The quote also takes place at the beginning of this story meaning that the Montagues and Capulets could have been enemies for years or even decades. ¨Once more, on pain of death, all men depart. 1.1.94” In this quote, the prince states that the next offender(between the two families, Montagues and Capulets) will serve the death penalty. Furthermore, the story between Romeo and Juliet was already set up as a tragedy before the have even met each other. :(

To make her feel better he has a great idea to set up a marriage with Paris, and later, forcing her to marry Paris because she refuses. ¨Romeo! Romeo! Romeo! Here’s drink. I drink to thee. 4.3.59¨ In this quote, Juliet has to fake her death so that she does not have to marry Paris. In other words, after getting married to her love, Romeo, she is forced to marry Paris but in their times, they could not get a
