Some schools are beginning to consider making school uniforms mandatory for all students in every grade. However, I believe this is the wrong choice for our school, and uniforms should not be enforced. It is easy to see how school uniforms may be an effective form of bully prevention, making our school a safer learning environment for students and an easier place for educators to work. However, the negatives do outweigh the positives. School uniforms force children to bottle up their creativity, carry a large expense, and will not prevent cliques as predicted.

The price of uniforms holds an unwanted burden upon the guardians of large and small families. It may seem easy to buy one uniform, or even a couple, but when struggling families are forced to put forth more money than necessary for clothing for their children it is easy to see that this argument is a strong one. The average cost of a school wardrobe for one child is around $500, that's four or five interchangeable outfits. This cost is an additional cost for clothing, as students will need a completely different wardrobe to wear outside of school. Even for the average family of two, that's an extra $1,000 just for their children to receive an education. These costs climb fast when you consider the larger families of 5-8 children, that's $2,500-$4,000. Some schools might respond by getting students a discount on uniforms, or just providing them without additional cost to families, but even then its an additional and expensive cost to the administration.
Many people pro school uniforms believe it will be effective in preventing the formation of cliques, however it will do the exact opposite. Pressuring students to dress the same does not make them the same, nor does it prevent them from excluding others. The large or small struggling families that are only able to afford one of two outfits for their students have a large disadvantage. Those students will be forced to wear the same outfits for 5 days a week. This in and of itself will do the exact opposite of preventing cliques, and perhaps bring about or encourage more
