The southern states depended heavily on slaves to work their plantations. The south depended heavily on slavery, and slavery was vital to the south because they needed the slave’s labor to work their plantations. This why slavery was so important to the southern political leaders. If the southern states didn’t have slavery their plantations would have most likely failed and they couldn’t produce anymore cotton. Since the northern states had industries and factories they didn’t have the need for slaves anymore. Many of the northern states had abolished slavery except the states bordering the southern states. …show more content…

One of the first compromises that had been accepted was the Missouri Compromise of 1820. The Missouri Compromise was the effort of Missouri not only to become a state but to become a slave state also. This upset the balance between slave and non-slave states. “They reached a boiling point after Missouri’s 1819 request for admission to the Union as a slave state, which threatened to upset the delicate balance between slave states and free states.”(History.com). In order to calm the sates down Missouri’s wishes were granted but it also admitted Maine as an anti-slave state. “To keep the peace, Congress orchestrated a two-part compromise, granting Missouri’s request but also admitting Maine as a free state.”(History.com). The Missouri Compromise also instituted a new amendment which created a line that separated slave states and

The Missouri Compromise was written in the year of 1820 on March 3rd and was also passed on the same day. This compromise approved Missouri to come to America as a slave state, but conserved the correspondence between the North and the South by modeling the land of Maine out of Massachusetts and stopping slavery from territories accomplished in the Louisiana Purchase which is the north of the line of 36 30’ and this is the southern boundary of Missouri. The South and the North was not satisfied with the Missouri Compromise because many southern congressmen balloted to oppose the compromise. They opposed it because the limit on future slavery in the territories was not excessively abusive to the slave owners. It was abusive to them because the…

However, this compromise also states that any state north of the Mason-Dixon line, “contemplated by this act, slavery and involuntary servitude, otherwise than in the punishment of crimes, whereof the parties shall have been duly convicted, shall be, and is hereby, forever prohibited.” It effectively divided the country by geography, and it indirectly splits people into a demographic.…

In addition with the Missouri compromise there were other political actions taken such as the entry of Maine into the union as a free state and the 30-60 line at the Louisiana Purchase which set a boundary for slave states and free ones. Maine was admitted as a free state from a part of Maryland to even out the states, at this time Henry Clay had proposed Missouri should enter as a slave state, this action once again made the states even. The 30-60 line at the Louisiana Purchase divided the slave states totally from the free ones; this gave a segregated vibe, which ultimately stopped the spread of slavery to the north by setting a tangible boundary.…

The Missouri Compromise was the resolution to the conflict involving those for slavery (the South) against those opposed to slavery (the North). Antagonism between the North and the South began to emerge in 1820 when Missouri applied to the United States as a slave state. At the time, in 1819, the United States had exactly eleven slave states and exactly eleven free states; by allowing Missouri into the nation, that balance would be disrupted and the Senate would be spiked towards the South. Missouri was admitted into the nation, however, the House approved an amendment outlawing any imported slaves from Africa to Missouri and set the children of slaves free. Ultimately the Senate rejected the amendment forcing Missouri out of the nation.…

When Missouri applied to become part of the union, they insisted on being a slave state. This upset the north due to their interest in a balance of power. The Missouri Compromise was enacted with the help of Henry Clay in order to come to a conclusion to the political arguments between the North and South. It stated that in order for Missouri to be accepted as a slave state, Maine would come into the union as a free state. Also, slavery wasn’t to be permitted north of latitude 36˚ 30’. The long retired Thomas Jefferson expressed his alarm to the happenings in American government by comparing the sectional disunity to a “fire bell in the night [that] awaked and filled me with terror.” (Document G) John Quincy Adams also stated that “If the union must be dissolved, slavery is precisely the question upon which it ought to break.” (Document F) By simply drawing a line to determine boundaries of slavery, it was inevitable that neither side would be completely satisfied in the long run.…

It allowed Missouri to be added as a slave state while Maine was established as a free state to maintain balance amongst the Union. This compromise was later negated by the Kansas-Nebraska Act put in place in 1854. According to Eric Foner, he states, “During the next two years, the Whig Party, unable to develop a unified response to the political crisis, collapsed. From a region divided between the two parties, the South became solidly Democratic... disgruntled Democrats, joined a new organization, the Republican Party, dedicated to preventing the further expansion of slavery” (Foner 512). Passed in 1854 The Kansas-Nebraska Act created a more sectional America because settlers could not determine the status of slavery among these territories by themselves. This led to events like Bleeding Kansas which was caused because when it came time to use their popular sovereignty to vote on whether to outlaw slavery or not people from other the states, like Missouri, would cross over the border and cast votes which led to elections being invalidated and having to be done over again on other days. Bleeding Kansas also led to many acts of violence that held political anti-slavery sentiments. However, the actual act itself states that it will leave the states “...created into a temporary government by the name of the Territory Nebraska; and... shall be received into the Union with or without slavery, as their constitution may prescribe at the time of the admission…" (The Kansas- Nebraska Act). The act had went against the Missouri Compromise because Stephen A. Douglas passed this bill to give territorial governments to Kansas and Nebraska which had allowed them to use popular sovereignty to make their decisions. This negates the Missouri Compromise because it disrupted the balance of admitting every other state as a free state. Also, it…

This compromise also preserved the shaky compact of the states. Later in 1865, the thirteenth amendment was added to the constitution eight months after the Civil War ended.…

Tensions between the north and the south came to a head after Missouri’s 1819 request for admission to the Union as a slave state, which threatened to upset the balance between slave states and free states. To keep the peace, Congress organized a two-part compromise in 1820 called the Missouri Compromise. This compromise granted Missouri’s request but also admitted Maine as a free state. It also passed an amendment that drew an imaginary line across the former Louisiana Territory, establishing a boundary between free and slave states that remained the law of the land until it was negated by the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854. This policy promoted sectionalism as it continued the separation of states but for the time being, put the argument over slavery at ease.…
