Why Is Summer Reading Important

Summer reading is always a topic with many different sides. Some people love it, and some people want the school to just back out of their summer. I’m right in between. I don’t love summer reading, but I know it’s important and serves many purposes. One of the purposes is to keep our minds active during the summer. I know if I didn’t have to read over the summer I wouldn’t. Summer reading kind of forces me to read, but in a good way. I end up really liking some of the books I read over the summer. Another reason why we need summer reading is to give the teachers something to talk about on the first few days of school. It’s especially important to English class because that is how we always start the school year. We talk about summer reading
and then write a paper. Even though some of us may not like summer reading as much as others it serves a purpose, and it’s not even that bad. We only have to read four books, which honestly, isn’t that many for three months. Even though I don’t love reading I like summer reading. It gives me something to do over the summer academically. Also, the people that assign us the books do a great job. Summer reading would be so much worse if there weren’t any good books on the list. Every book I read this summer, besides Girl in Translation, I loved. Whenever I start summer reading I approach it with an open mind. I know it always turns out better than I think it will. Even if I really don’t want to read once I get into my first book I usually can’t put it down.
