In most companies across the globe, the department designated to hire, train and retain employees is mainly the HR department and the management of human resources is called HRM since 1980s. It was in the past also referred to as the personnel department and it was mainly responsible for managing the functions of hiring qualified employees to the company, as well as managing and developing employees and improving their skills and performance during their presence and commitment in the company.

Training and development has become one of the most desired employee benefits as learning new skills and having a wide job knowledge is the number one between these benefits. The importance of training and development is clearly shown by both employees’ personal satisfaction and companies’ growth (Gregory P. Smith). Well trained employees will be able to have more control and less supervision over their job. Employees who understand their job complains less, more satisfied and more motivated which leads for better management-employee relationships and more productivity, therefore more loyalty and employee’ commitment toward the company. Nowadays, companies invest more on training and development to increase the employees ‘productivity, reduce employees’ turnover, increase efficiency resulting from the financial gains as well as decreasing the need of supervision. Moreover companies dedicate efforts to face and adopt the forces previously mentioned that play a significant role in the company’s success and growth, therefore gain a competitive advantage. As a big amount of time and money will be invested on training and development and the lost that will be incurred if the designed and implemented training and development program failed to attain its objective.
