Why Kepler-10c Shouldn T Exist
The planet that shouldn’t exist, also known as Kepler-10c. Kepler-10c is 560 light years away from earth. Kepler-10b shares the same star system as Kepler-10c. Which if you were wondering Kepler-10b is a “Lava world” that has a year of 20 hours long. Kepler-10c was discovered by the Kepler space probe. This “planet that shouldn’t exist” has a structure similar to the gas giants of the solar system. According to (Place Citation here) “Scientist looked at Kepler-10c with the HARPS-North Instrument on the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo in the Canary Islands.” (Place Citation Here) also says “astronomers believe that Kepler-10c is 17 times heavier than Earth.” Gas giants are not very dense due to their vast atmospheres of hydrogen and helium. Kepler-10c is solid, which is unheard of for a planet that size. …show more content…
The CfA team said that any planet that size would have enough gravity to collect a massive atmosphere around it. Which would have formed it into a gas giant similar to Jupiter or bigger. Kepler-10c appears to be a giant rock, it raises the question how do planets form. Further research resulted in the knowing of how old Kepler-10 star system really is. Kepler-10’s star system is 11 billion years old, this means it formed only 3 years after the big bang materialized. The rocky structure that Kepler-10 holds indicates that the heavy elements obligated to create this planet were accessible earlier than thought. But it's no longer part of an exclusive club, since there are more than 40 of these dwarfs, including the large asteroid Ceres and 2003 UB313, nicknamed Xena—a distant object slightly larger than Pluto discovered by Brown last year. "We know of 44" dwarf planets so far, Brown said. "We will find hundreds. It's a very huge category." A clear majority of researchers voted for the new definition at a meeting of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in Prague, in the Czech Republic. The IAU decides the official names of all celestial bodies. The tough decision comes after a multiyear search for a scientific definition of the word "planet." The term never had an official meaning before. What Is a Planet Today? According to the new definition, a full-fledged planet is an object that orbits the sun and is large enough to have become round due to the force of its own gravity. In addition, a planet has to dominate the neighborhood around its orbit. Pluto has been demoted because it does not dominate its neighborhood. Charon, its large "moon," is only about half the size of Pluto, while all the true planets are far larger than their moons. In addition, bodies that dominate their neighborhoods, "sweep up" asteroids, comets, and other debris, clearing a path along their orbits. By contrast, Pluto's orbit is somewhat untidy.
