Children can also receive self-esteem boosts, which may improve confidence and school performance” (Hatter, 2017). For example, Mark Peterson, a scientist with a PhD in health exercise found that “stressed-out people who frequently played such sports--- or danced--- had fewer depressive symptoms, like decreased mood and hopelessness and frazzled folks who did other forms of exercise” (Stewart, 2014). This is relevant because over 300 million people are affected by depression, and almost 3,000 people a day commit suicide, over 50% of them suffered from depression. According to Let’s Move, “one in three children is overweight or obese” (Gremont, 2015). This means about 66% of children are overweight. During sports practices coaches will have children run, especially competitive sports. Running is a proven way to lose weight and get fit. Obesity can lead to numerous health conditions. Referring to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, it can lead to type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and strokes, certain types of cancer, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, fatty liver disease, kidney disease, and other health conditions (NIDDK, https://www.niddk.nih.gov/health-information/weight-management/health-risks-overweight). As you can see obesity can be harmful, it is actually the 5th leading cause of death. My final example of why being healthy is a good thing and how sports can achieve that is obesity reduction. “The American Journal of Preventive Medicine, researchers analyzed obesity prevention strategies and their ability to reduce obesity by the year 2032. They found afterschool physical activity programs would reduce obesity the most, 1.8% among children ages 6 to 12. That's twice the projected impact as any ban on child-directed fast-food advertising” (The Aspen Institute Project Play, 2018, https://www.aspenprojectplay.org/kids-facts-benefits). We all know how bad fast food is right?
