As a young child, Nelson thought that he was free, free to do whatever he wanted. Yet, as he grew older, this idea of freedom changed. Mandela dedicated his life to making sure that the generations after him are free. Not just in his villages but in South Africa as a whole. Making sure that the children of the future get the comfort of knowing that they can be and do whatever they wanted. That no one owns that them. That when children grow up, they don’t have to make the same discovery he did. Mandela claimed that “ … my boyhood freedom was an illusion, when I discovered as a young man that my freedom had already been taken away from me …”(Mandela 735) He fought for the chance that one day everyone can have that Freedom. The sense of freedom he had as a child. This feeling, the hunger for freedom, made him so moved that he joined the South African Congress. He joined not just for his own freedom but “the greater hunger for freedom of my people. Nelson Mandela is against oppression and this is what many of the children of the world is going through. “ … that was my mission, to liberate the oppressed and the oppressor both.” (Mandela) Mandela understands that the oppressed are not the only ones that need help but the ones that are doing the oppression. Mandela wants to help the oppressed and there are many children out there that need that kind of help. There are children that need to be saved from there living conditions, that need medical attention and better food quality and cruel families. “A man who takes away another man’s freedom is a prisoner of hatred …” (Mandela) No one should be oppressed because of their gender, race, and religion and that is what Nelson Mandela believes in.
