I think that people enjoy being scared for many reasons. Today I’m going to talk about three of them, but I could probably give about twenty more reasons why I like being scared, or scaring people. No matter what, even with all the reasons I gave, the number one reason is that a lot of people think that it’s fun to be scared. However, the reasons I talked about for why I like being scared are that it gives me an adrenaline rush, it clears my mind, and it makes me aware of my surroundings.
My first reason is being scared gives people an adrenaline rush. Everytime I get scared, I normally get an adrenaline rush and my brain thinks that something could happen when I'm not paying attention while watching, seeing,
or reading something scary. Most people only like being scared for this purpose and they only like getting scared when they know they are in a safe place. An essay at theatlantic.com states that to “really enjoy a situation, we have to know we're in a safe environment. It's all about triggering that amazing fight-or-flight response to experience the flood of adrenaline, endorphins, and dopamine, but in a completely safe space”. This is probably the biggest reason that I’m giving in this essay, because it affects the next two quite a bit.
My second reason is being scared clears my mind. Similarly to what I said about the adrenaline rush, being scared clears my mind because everything else you are thinking about gets kind of shoved out of the way. This is because my mind usually focuses on the scary thing when there is something that is scary. My brain usually goes straight to thinking that the scary thing, whether it is a story or a movie, is going to come true. My brain instantly thinks that, like how google instantly saves changes to your document or presentation. Honestly, doesn’t everyone immediately start thinking about the guy in the horror movie chasing people with a chainsaw instead of all the homework that’s due tomorrow?
My final reason is that when I get scared, I’m always much more aware of my surroundings. Everytime I read a scary story, watch a scary movie, or something like that I always am very paranoid and on edge. For example, I had a nightmare about this clown that smelled like he had not showered in a week with bloodshot eyes and what appeared to be blood dripping down his face with a very sharp red meat cleaver in his hand that got into our house through our garage door. So every time I walked past that door for the next week, I got scared and started looking around alot as I would start walking faster and faster. Another example is that when I go down stairs, there’s a mirror I usually look at and it reflects a golf bag that’s in the corner. Immediately, I always think that there is a person there and I freak out.
These are the reasons that I enjoy being scared and why I think most people like being scared. I think that my reason about the fight-or-flight or adrenaline was the one that is the biggest reason because it actually affects it clearing my mind and making me aware of my surroundings. These reasons are why I like being scared when it isn’t actually serious. If there is any chance something could actually happen, then I definitely do not like being scared in that context. I hope you enjoyed my reasons for why I like being scared.
