Why Was Butler's Use Of Contraband?
Frank, Sheppard, and James, were all slaves who worked in fields. They had plans on escaping once they heard that their master was planning on sending them away. This was to help build fortification in North Carolina. When they went off to go escape on May 23, 1861 they were spotted by a guard and they were reported to the fort. They were asked many questions. After the interrogation, Major butler had to turn them in.

Butlers original intentions were not to turn the slaves in. He wanted to earn soldiers respect by not sending them back to slavery. Butler was told by Colonel Mallory to give the slaves back but butler didn’t follow orders. This was putting his job and potentially his life on the line for keeping these slaves. So he was faced with a decision either to keep the slaves or return them back or lose all of the soldiers respect.

Butler kept the slaves which caused more slaves to want to escape to butlers fort for freedom. More than 500 slaves/fugitives escaped (slavery) and went to Butler’s fort. They felt more at home because they didn’t have to work as much as they used to. They were able to take breaks and eat good food on a daily basis. A rebel prisoner, when asked by a Union soldier why they were fighting in the war he responded “...they was fightin ' for their 'rats '...[they] kept on inistin ' they wasn 't fightin ' for no slaves, they were fightin ' for their 'rats '”.[4] Although Shaara was ambiguous as to which rights they were referring to, it can logically be deducted that the Confederate soldier was referring to state rights, as that was a large issue surrounding the secession of the southern states. The Union view remained firm in the belief that the Southerners were fighting strictly on the basis of their right to own slaves as exhibited in a conversation between Chamberlain and his brother Tom, when Tom…

The slave owners tried everything they could to keep their slaves. They tried peonage, discriminatory laws, and gave them no education to succeed in life. The former slaves should’ve been given their freedom and justice when the war was over. Some basic justices they should’ve gotten include a chance at education and a type of compensation. This discrimination in the south lasted for about fifty more years until Martin Luther King Jr. saw the differences between whites and blacks. The justice for freed slaves took a long time to obtain and we should be aware of the difficulties the former slaves went…

He said, “The war now being waged in the land is a war for and against slavery; and that it can never be effectually put down till one or the other of these vital forces is completely destroyed.” This shows Douglass’s strong belief that the war was being fought over slavery, and that it would not end until slavery was either abolished or approved. Douglass also said, “Any attempt to secure peace to the whites while leaving the blacks in chains… will be labor lost. The American people and the Government at Washington may refuse to recognize it for a time; but the “inexorable logic of events” will force it upon them in the end.” This shows that Douglass believed that not only was slavery the topic of the war, but also that trying to allow peace for white people while keeping black slaves was a lost cause.…
