Albert Einstein who fled from the Nazi persecution was one of the two main scientist who took part in project. The genius that accompanied Einstein was a man by the name of Enrico Fermi. Fermi escaped fascist Italy. Both having knowledge of nuclear engineering in the axis powers they agreed to inform President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Einstein wrote and delivered a letter to the Roosevelt discussing the need for nuclear research. At the time the President saw no need for it because there was no immediate threat but agreed to slowly make a progression towards the research. Einstein and Fermi would lead project. Research was at first based out of three main sites. Columbia University, University of Chicago and the University of California at Berkeley. Assembly of the bombs in Los Alamos was led by Robert Oppenheimer. Frederick Reines another big name in this project once said, “During my participation in the Manhattan Project and subsequent research at Los Alamos, encompassing a period of fifteen years, I worked in the company of perhaps the greatest collection of scientific talent the world has ever known”.
