The United nations officially came into existence on the 24th of October 1945 when the official charter was ratified by the 51 original member states. This day has continued to be celebrated every year as 'UN Day'. The UN is composed of a total of 192 people, all of whom represent different nations who together, rectify contemporaneous issues which the individual nations may be unable to resolve on their own, and require collective assistance- which they will receive from the United Nations. The UN is not a world government but takes a step forward to provide the means to help resolve international conflicts and formulate policies on matters affecting all of us. According to the Charter, the UN has four purposes:
-to maintain international peace & security
-to develop friendly relations between nations
-to cooperate in solving international problems and in promoting respect for human rights
-and to be a centre for harmonizing the actions of nations
They have lived up to this, considering the fact that they are feeding over 90 million people everyday, they have assisted 36 million refugees from war in Syria by providing them with shelter, help the people of different countries, whether large or small; rich or poor; with differing political views and social systems to try and fight cases of hunger, disease, poverty and human rights abuse by sending in military, food, medicine to them when required.
Today, the security of our world is under threat from all sides; whether it is terrorism, sickness, climate change, population growth, natural disaster or use of weapons. Without the United Nations, the world wouldn't have continued to be half or maybe even quarter of what it is today. Had the UN not approached the enumerated factors or ones like hunger, refuge or disease around the world, a combined number of over 1 billion people may not even be breathing right now.
