Witchcraft In The Middle Ages
In medieval times women were blamed for the sinking of ships, they brought famine, disease, murdered and maimed. They were known as Satan’s handmaidens. Hundreds of people were persecuted, tortured, and were put to death in a hysterical effort. You could be accused and tortured on the basis of nothing more than the gossip and superstition of others. Witchcraft had all the reason to exist during medieval times when the human knowledge was still at an unsophisticated stage. Since there seemed to be no other reasonable reasons for nature's destructions supernatural forces were to blame such as witchcraft.
Witchcraft originated with the human culture. The fear of the unknown and phenomena led to believe in supernatural forces such as witches.

This practice was most common among the wise folk. They followed the path of nature and were in sync with its mystical powers. Their knowledge of herbs and medicines, they gave wise counsel and were known as leaders within the village. Nature was a great force and humans were merely just a part of it. They understood that what we take from the earth must be returned to restore the balance. They normally healed, made herbal remedies, fortune telling services, etc. They, of course, were paid for their services. Cunning meaning knowledgeable or wise came from an old English term kenning, this meant semi-professional or professional practitioners of magic. The “Cunning Folk” also known as, “White Witches” held the role of helping those who needed it, they were seen as helpful within the …show more content…
Many think that it is associated with Satanism and Demons. You could distinguish “White Witches” from “Black Witches”. Black witches typically used magic to cause physical and/or practical harm. The difference between the two was forgotten during the Renaissance Era, known for its notorious witch-hunts. Black magic was not taken lightly, and many feared those who used it. Many forget that magic has no color, that it is colorless. People associated Black as evil and white as pure.
Wicca is a religion influenced by pre-Christian beliefs and practices of Western Europe. The word “Wicca” has acquired from Anglo-Saxon word wicce, this means to have wisdom. Wicca stands for male witch and wicce stands for the female witch. Initially followers were seen to be evil-natured Satan worshipers. Many, as the old Pagan religion meaning the craft of the wise, define Wicca. It has become a popular religious movement and is gaining strength by the day. The Wicca believers run into millions of their kind often and are found mostly in English speaking countries. The U.S. constitution recognizes the Wicca religion like any other religion and they receive the same rights and freedom just like any other

Witchcraft is the root of all evil, it is an excuse for bad things going wrong to man. Evans-Pritchard learned this, first hand, living among the Azande people. The people did not try to account for situations of misfortune, instead they explained “particular conditions in a chain of causation which related an individual to natural happenings in such a way that he sustained injury” (Evans-Pritchard, 67). If someone in the village were to become ill and had received an injury prior to becoming ill, the explanation was witchcraft-it had nothing to do with the…

For hundreds of years, the word “witch” has been associated with innumerable negative images. Witches were considered devil worshipers who committed scores of evil deeds toward society. By the 14th Century, a law was passed outlawing any practice of witchcraft or sorcery; anyone in Europe accused of witchcraft was subject to the torture and execution. In the 1450’s there was a breakout of violent persecutions against people accused of being witches. “During this time more than 100,000 people (mostly woman) were killed for allegedly practicing witchcraft” (Kallen 33) . Witches were viewed by the public as dangerous and uncontrollable menaces to society. They were believed to have relationships with the devil, this relationship was developed because of the church demonizing the witches in the 1450’s. During this time, people lacked medical knowledge about sickness and disease. When the witches were healthy during many of these wide spread diseases, the people believed they were the ones that cursed everyone with it. The people believed that witches could curse people that they did not like. In the city, It was common for old beggars to be on the side of the street asking for change but when people refused to give the beggars coins, they would angrily curse at the passersby. If the people that the…

The European witch craze started in the 14th century and lasted until the 17th century. Over this period of time there have been between 200,000 and 500,000 witches executed. 85% of those were women. The Change of the inquisition’s objectives determined the character and timing of these executions, also a big part of that played differentiation process within medieval society. Women began to occupy higher positions within European society. A part of it was the higher proportion of female leaders and their influence on the changing economic roles. On the one hand it was a great period of time for women on the other they had to face increasing pressures from society and unfortunately, men became threatened by them therefore they put them in a worse light and highlighted their negatives. These executions gained common acceptance within society. People developed demonological theories and studied it. Witch craft in the early period was mainly a means of allocating blame for disasters that couldn’t otherwise be explained. People believed that there was a war between god and the devil and devil sent witches to earth as a means of revenge and to punish the human race. Because there was no logical or scientific explanation for meteorological incidents or deaths people looked into religion. There are several questions I asked myself when researching the subject witch craze. Why did it start in 14th century? Why did it end in 17th century? Why were women the main victims? And why did people associate witches with demons?…

People believed witches were associated with the devil and evil, this is why people feared them during the Salem Witch trials. These beliefs originated from the European Witch-Hunts of the 14th to the 18th century, this caused the executions of tens of thousands of people. Over time, the idea of white magic transformed into dark magic and became associated with demons and evil spirits. From 1560 to 1670, witchcraft persecutions became common as superstitions became associated with the devil. The witch’s magic slowly changed and became known as evil, and as the perspective on magic changed so did the perspective on witches. A definition of a witch now is, “A witch, a person, now especially a woman who is supposed to have evil or wicked magical powers.” (Linder, Famous…

In the seventeenth century virtually everyone in the Western world believed that the devil confederated with in human beings and either enable them to inflict by supernatural means or else did it for them (Morgan 48). Morgan also states in his article that “Others believed that both the devil and his witches could actually cause things like storms or sickness or fatal accidents.” So with beliefs like these going around the different villages, it made it very easy to believe when a group of young girls started acting out and faking sickness to blame one woman of witch craft. Also, in ancient time witch craft was viewed in some societies as a relatively respectable profession of its time. People would seek their help in time of need. Unfortunately, over time witch craft became frowned upon because of nonreligious review of it within the church. Due to this it adhered to the people’s negative takes on witches and started to associate them with the devil. With events like these could make its very easy for people to believe that witches could only be the clause of evil happening with in their…
