With these problems identified, the root of the problems can now be further inspected and analysed. Jane has verbalized that she is stressed and wants to quit nursing. The question is Jane stressed because of nursing or is there other factors of stress that causing her to want to quit nursing? These two points differ vastly. One being that she cannot cope with the transition of academic to practical and thus feels that she cannot continue and the other would mean that Jane is facing other problems that is making her have difficulties in her PRCP which somehow leads her to want to quit nursing as a result. Baring it in mind that Jane had verbalized that she is feeling stress however, in spite of that, Jane still turns up for her clinical despite…
result, the shortage of RNs is expected to increase considering the fact that the ageing RNs who joined the profession before other job opportunities opened to women, will be retiring at a time when the shortage is critical. Also, the ageing RN retirements will impact the supply of nursing educators. Most nurses enter graduate school later in their careers when they are getting close to retirement age. At the beginning of N300, the main reason students gave for pursuing the Bachelors degree was so…
To become a registered nurse, you go through grueling training and studying. It takes time, effort, dedication, a couple breakdowns, and calling. It would be assumed that an individual going through all of this struggle and work to get those two influential letters behind their name would never think to turn away from the profession once finally achieving the role that such commitment was given to. Unfortunately, no one can prepare an eager R.N. graduate for the journey they are about to take. It comes down to the individual and their evaluation and interpretation of factors that lessen their motivation and task value in the profession they only thought would bring satisfaction and gratitude. Many nurses quit each year for numerous reasons to the point that nursing retention ideas…
Throughout the decades, the nursing field of has brought millions and millions of people to above average paying jobs. Along with that, opportunities arise every day, and await all degree holders of nursing, especially those students that graduated from top nursing schools, and since nursing is proved to be in an endless great demand, seems more nursing schools grow and multiply every year like mushrooms. When you get ready to become a nurse and get a…
Frustration. That’s the first word that pops into me head every time I go to clinical. Day after day, being pushed out the way. It made me feel unworthy and stupid. Everybody is getting paired up nurses, while I—I just get to stay on the floor and do mediocre work. Yay. Why aren’t I getting paired with a nurse? Highest achieving student in my nursing class and everyone under the sun, except for me, gets to be with a nurse. I feel incredible anger when I think of why. Under these circumstances, I have been forced to take it out on myself. I keep interrogating my brain, racking my mind for possible causes of this injustice. I must not kid myself, I guess I’m more “book smart” than practical coordinated, but I still deserve a chance.…
The atmosphere that the nurses work in are at times described as one of inappropriate skill-mix, low nurse to patient ratios; a lack of involvement in decision making; managing constant changes; issues with shift work; leave and pay; and increased patient expectations. Such problems add upon the workloads and stress levels of nurses leaving them feeling undervalued with a loss of interest to continue. Recent findings show a 1 to 1.4 % per month nurse attrition rate in just one state (New South Wales). High rates of nursing attrition where staff willingly leave or transfer between positions in nursing, or leave completely for another profession is an important priority for the health system for a range of reasons. Firstly, attrition is costly, estimating at $16,634 per nurse in Australia. Secondly, attrition affects the roles, morals and the stress levels of remaining staff that successively affects upon nurse productivity.…
This essay will reflect on my personal and professional development during my first year on the nursing diploma programme. I will do this by discussing my experience with the five essential skills clusters which include care, compassion and communication, medicine management and nutrition and fluid management. I will relate the five skills by showing an understanding of a recognised model of reflection. Reflection, is a way of analysing past incidents to promote learning and improve safety, in the delivery of health care in practice. For the purposes of this essay I have chosen the Gibbs reflective cycle model (Gibbs, 1988, cited in O’Caroll & Park, 2007, p86), will be followed, as it gives an opportunity to produce a structured account of the discussion. Gibbs (1988) consists of six stages to complete one cycle which is able to improve my nursing practice continuously and learning from the experience for better practice in the future. The cycle starts with a description of the situation, next is to analysis of the feelings, third is an evaluation of the experience, fourth stage is an analysis to make sense of the experience, fifth stage is a conclusion of what else could I have done and final stage is an action plan to prepare if the situation arose again. In order to respect the patient’s and staff member’s confidentiality (Nursing Midwifery Council, (NMC), the code of standards of conduct, performance, and ethics for nurses and midwives, 2008), the precise location of this placement will not be named. Consent (NMC, 2008) has been obtained from patients mentioned within this essay, although in the interest of maintaining confidentiality (NMC, 2008) of the patients, therefore pseudonyms will be used.…
So, although, in the beginning, dropping out of college may not have seemed like the right decision, it had a positive effect on my life. I received 20 transferrable college credits and received some knowledge that will be very useful in my future nursing courses. I feel well prepared for school after learning the importance of education and studying while in college. I was exposed to a plethora of learning resources, and became very computer/technology-savvy. There is something new to learn in every aspect of technology, and I expect to become very knowledgeable after taking this course. It may be difficult memorizing every technique, but it will be a great experience.…

Since I work in the hospital setting with a cardiology group, there is not a lot of large quality and risk management projects that take place within our group; however, we do try to do our own risk management and quality improvements to enhance patient safety and efficiency. One of the challenges that we face is the discharge planning process or the lack there of. We typically do not admit patients, and the majority of the time we are consulted to see patients regarding an acute and chronic cardiac conditions. Many times, the hospitalist are pressured to discharge a patient within 3-4 days of admission. Therefore, one problem area that has been identified, was the discharge medications were not accurate. The hospitalist would write the…
For many students, the rigours of their study mean that the jobs they are forced to work in are badly paid with unsociable hours. Their choice of continuing study comes at a high price as they struggle to meet the demands of their courses through tiredness and poverty. No wonder so many give up the struggle. Their failure comes at a cost to us…
Burnout has been studied extensively in nursing and unfortunately is a common phenomenon. Burnout is not a recognized mental disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM); however, it is recognized in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) (ICD-10 code; Z73) which can be located under problems related to life-management difficulty. (ICD10, 2016; PubMed Health, 2013). In the 1970s, an American psychologist, Herbert Freudenberger created the term “burnout” in which he used to define the outcome of extreme pressures among those that “sacrificed themselves for others” such as doctors and nurses (Jennings, 2008; PubMed Health, 2013, para 2;). According to Jennings (2008), since the 1980’s stressful work…
