Morrow’s professional contributions have been and continue to be filled with a desire to help students as well as focused on mentoring young professionals. During her tenure at Gallaudet she was involved in mentoring junior faculty, teaching assistants and student laboratory teachers. Her desire to nurture and help young people continued into her retirement as she is now serving as a STEM Program Director for the DC Metropolitan area HBCU Alumni Alliance. Objectives of the STEM workshop are to provide opportunities for the students to conduct experiments with graduates of HBCUs who are currently working in STEM-related occupations. In addition, the students have an opportunity to talk to the scientists to learn more about their STEM profession and to develop mentoring opportunities. This program has received broad acclaim and praise for the variety of STEM areas covered, the quality of the…
During the Scientific Revolution women decided they were going to erupt from the tradition of being housewives and study science, literature, and astronomy even if men and other women would shun upon them. From the 1600s to the 1700s women attempted to make a break through, some women neglected house worthy chores, personal appearance, and more so that they could study. Although some women did all of these "chores and duties" and still had time to learn about science and other fields.…
Ive always been drawn to science since I was three or four. I never like Barbies or Polly pockets like my sisters but instead I had toy…
Dr. Chandra Prescod-Weinstein is the 63rd African-American woman to attain a doctorate in physics, and specializes in theoretical physics. Upon further reading, about Dr. Prescod-Weinstein, it begged the question--What are astrophysicists, and why are there a small number of African-American women for who attain PhDs in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) related fields? Both globally and domestically, there are major differences in girls educated in STEM.…
"On multiple social media sites and online communities, a photo of the two stars was uploaded with the words, ""A picture of Jo In Sung and Go Hyun Jung captured at a Japanese airport."" In the said picture, the actors seem to be moving their baggage while standing next to each other.…
“The concept of gender is used by sociologists to describe all the socially given attributes, roles, activities and responsibilities connected to being male or female in a given society. Our gender identity determines how we are perceived and how we are expected to think and act as women and men, because of the way society is organised” (March et al, 1999)…
Imagine having only one purpose in life: to serve men. Your place was to cook, clean, bear children, and look pretty. You had no right to vote or to live your own life in the way you wanted to. This is what women have faced for countless years leading up to the Women’s Rights Movement. Even though many women took on tremendous workloads and dangerous risks during the American Revolution, they still were not granted freedom. It was in early July, 1848 when action is finally take. The Women’s Rights Movement was a major event that led to an abundance of new opportunities for women and left behind an ever-lasting drive for women to continue their fight for equality.…

The topic of equality is not something that is new to me, but as of recently has opened my eyes to new perspectives and ideas on the subject. Through women and gender studies, I have discovered that I am a post-feminist with sincere fictions about some of the people around me. Although I consider myself open, accepting and curious of other cultures, women and gender studies has allowed me the opportunity to explore a couple of topics through campus discussions to apply my newfound knowledge. I was able to attend a scholarly discussion based on overcoming set identities, binary understanding of religions through the need of belonging to a community and bridging gender gaps in outdoor leadership. The ladder is interesting to me since I am a minority in my field of outdoor leadership and education. Women studies will enable me to better address gender issues and insecurities in the field. While there have been advancements in equality for people based on gender, class, race, ethnic and social backgrounds, we still have farther to go before we can truly reach equality.…
My social issue that I am researching is gender roles. I am looking at how each gender is treated differently based on their biological design. Women are seen as caring, child bearers, emotional, and weak. Whereas on the other hand, according to society men are strong, aggressive, breadwinners, manly, and man of the house. Based upon these different stereotypes given to men and women there is a huge gender difference in abilities and work ethic. Men tend to make more money on average and work than women. Women also are less likely to be in leadership or promoted to boss like jobs. In Afghanistan woman are very much oppressed, very few have an education or work most…
I was one of the students selected. We went to a lab in Chicago where employees did things like dissect the tails of rats, look at embryos in containers, and observe the tumors in live fish that swam around healthier fish. This experience was incredibly beautiful to me. I was the first person walking behind the employees as they walked us around the vicinity due to my interest. One employee needed an assistant for the activity he created for us and I volunteered to be his partner. As I do tend to be quiet, it was captivating how much I felt comfortable in this biological scientific environment. My teacher even noticed how fascinated I was. I felt at…
My observation took place in LA Valley College , October 4,2016 at 10:00 am. My experience was amazing, the first thing that crossed my mind is that I wanted to work in the field as soon as possible, I felt wonderful watching a lot of kids playing around, doing their own thing, playing by themselves or together. It was hard to pick only one child to observe.…
The first day in my honors chemistry class I expected it to be like any other science class I had taken in the past, but the first class discussion was that scientists today have only discovered a minute amount of the workings of the universe and that by following a process, new relationships, not previously discovered, may present themselves. This idea of discovering something unheard of made me realized that I was going to enjoy chemistry. That afternoon I started on some additional practice problems out of the textbook. Starting the first problem I had this feeling that I would make a mistake and get the problem incorrect; on the contrary, following the process discussed in class that day made the problem seem almost effortless. Before I knew it I was already done with that problem and had completed four more just like it. Doing these problems gave me a sense of self-assurance and the feeling that I actually understood chemistry, not like English where I felt like all of the essays and parts of speech were out to get me. Chemistry was different, not like my English class where I slacked off with my work or my history class where my attention was typically not on the teacher.…
Feminist criticism is type of literature analysis that tends to advocates the plight of women, thereby protecting women’s right. Feminist criticism will highlight how women differ from men, the characteristic of women and behavior in the society. Feminist criticism will thus study factors such as racial issues, ideologies, marginality and many more aspects that women feel that they are not given an equal right in the society. After reading Jake Allsop’s Gossip I see that this work can be regarded as a feminist literature work. In this story, the play depicts the life of women who has been suppressed and ignored by the negligent husband. This story shows an inside look at the life of women who is being oppressed because of the lack of attention from the husband. Through the dialogue and narration we can analyze Jake Allsop’s “Gossip” using feminist criticism.…
The next instance was the next year in Physics class, with the same teacher. I was in the same group as the year before, minus the hitchhiker. The problem this time was actually me. I did not understand much of the material we were working on, so when we met for group work outside of class, I found myself being a couch potato. This was very bad for me, because despite going to group meetings, I learned nothing. In turn, by the time our first couple of tests came I was clueless, and I failed miserably. After my first couple of tests, I realized I could not do that or I might even not graduate. Basically I was going nowhere very fast, and I started asking my group and teacher to help me learn the material. After that, I started putting in the effort and somehow managed to finish the class with a B.…
